Should I continue treatment?

Years ago, when i was about 10, I was under the orthodontist, who were saying I would need an operation to widen my cleft palate. I never had that operation; instead I had 4years of wearing arious braces. My braces came off last year, and I've been supposed to be wearing retainers.

I have been wearing them (maybe not as often as I should have) but my bottom teeth have still moved. They're not as bad as they started out, but the front 5 teeth have moved noticably.

My orthodontist has been amazing, in that he has said to me I could have a fixed brace put on my bottom 8 teeth, for 6months or so, and then have a permanent retainer.

I'm a bit resentful about doing this, considerin that during the time I had a brace, my confidence went into negative numbers, I had a terrible lisp throughout, and was mildly bullied.

Its not going to be quite the same extent, but I'm worried that with this brace, my speech will decline again; and doing a degree in english, I HAVE to speak.

So what do you think? Is it worth getting this brace back on for 6months, for something that only I actually notice?

Stop thinking cosmetics and think "brace for 6 months, loss of confidence for 6 months, then perfect teeth for the rest of my life, or no brace and **** teeth forever".

Just go for it, i mean you'll be getting them on now for 6 months for free when in 5 years time you'll still look at them and know there not perfect and have to pay a couple of thouand to get them fixed. Chances are since it will only be on one set of teeth your speech will not be affected that much.

The NHS do not offer ceramic braces BUT i believe since you are an adult and have your student loan that for a small fee (£20 per bracket) you can possibly have ceramics placed on your teeth, obviously this depends on your orthodontist. Another option to look into is invisalin which are very similar to retainers but move your teeth, getting a new tray every few weeks although i dont think the NHS would offer this at all.

i see where you're coming from. Its just the fact that noone actually says anything about my teeth. Its just me that notices it. And it took a hell of a long time to regain my confidence last time. :s-smilie:

:wavey: Hey S.E.

I am going to get braces in two weeks time actually and a lot of what you say sounds familar, I'm really worried about my speech suffering, my confidence going down and people acting differently towards me :frown: I'm sure I'm overreacting but I can't help but worry.

I'm quite determined to get it done though because its something thats always bothered me and will make me feel better about myself. You say you will be the only one to notice, but you're the most important person are you not  You should go for it, if its something you want to do!

6 months isn't that bad. I suppose a big concern of yours would be speaking in class? Well is there a way of organising your treatment so that you miss a lot of uni out? Get them through your summer holidays and you will be able to come back to uni next year more confident than ever

Good luck anyway :hugs:

Yes... but if you leave it too long, it might turn into something that can't simply be fixed by braces. If you have a leaky kettle you don't keep using it hoping that because it's caused you no trouble before it won't suddenly explode. Well, you can't get a second set of teeth.

If your main worry is the lisp, I guarantee no one at Uni will make fun of you for having a lisp and you won't lose marks in presentations because of it!
