I've had both and I think psychotherapy is different from counselling because the therapist actually asks questions and gets you to think about why you feel the wa you do and they come up with ways of dealing with problems whereas, a counsellor will just sit and listen while you talk at them. The purpose of counselling is to just talk it out.

Therapy may address specific forms of diagnosable mental illness, or everyday problems in relationships or meeting personal goals. Treatment of everyday problems is more often referred to as counseling (a distinction originally adopted by Carl Rogers) but the term is sometimes used interchangeably with "psychotherapy".

That's not completely true. They do offer suggestions and they can hear what you're saying and use insight to tell you new things that you may not realise you just said. I know it happened for me and it's interesting to gain an objective perspective on what was said as it provides new angles to look at things.
