I have to write my personal statement and I would like to be either a adult nurse or a operational practitioner. However, I'm confused whether they are the same thing or not???
Can someone explain please?
Thanks😄

' Operational Practitioner' do you mean Perioperative Practitioner via the Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) route ...
Perioperative Practitioners in the UK come from two professions - Nurses and ODPs ... most of the RNs in perioperative are Adult Nurses although there are a small but significant numberof RN (Child) especially in centres with a lot of paeds surgery .
if you are sure that perioperative practice ( and perhaps a little bit of Major Trauma and Critical Care ) is where you want to work , look at ODP as the vastest majority of perioperative roles are Open to ODPs ( the exception is Surgical Care (advanced) Practitioners with a ward- based aspect to their role where prescribing is required as ODPs cannot access Prescribing at this time ... )
if you are unsure then consider RN as you can specialise and subspecialise in peri-operative care post registration , although you may find some places do not like having RNs working on the anaesthetic side or limit the numbers of RNs who can obtain the competencies vs scrubbing / first assistance / PACU)

I would like to be an ODP.
But do I have to be nurse first and then specialise in operations or can I just do a degree to become a ODP??😄

Did you enjoy our Open Day? What is it about being an ODP that interests you?
