Rutherford

Hola mi amigos!

I am think abouting putting rutherford as my top choice for halls. Now, i looked inside the place briefly when I looked round and it looks nice, so is anyone on here in Rthfd and has an opinion on it, that would be grand.

Cheers.

I'm not in Rutherford but having two friends who are in there, to me, it's the second nicest of the catered halls (behind DC imo), but Emma will have more of an idea than me...

Nick's room in Faraday is pretty good, i'm sure Faraday has to be quite highly ranked for catered halls...

I'm in my second year in Rutherford, and it's a great hall  It's in the middle of rolling refurbishment (redecorating over the holidays) - the corridors were done last summer holidays so it looks pretty nice and new.

I will get heavily flamed for this following statement, but anyway, it's my opinion.
Rutherford has nicer rooms than Cayley, in my opinion. I've been in all types of Cayley rooms and all types of Rutherford rooms, and the RU rooms look nicer (probably because they've been redecorated more recently). I feel Cayley just has a slightly lower standard of rooms, especially in blocks 14, 15 and 16 (which are the 3 biggest blocks) - 14 has rooms that are a bit too small (especially compared to Cayley & Rutherford BLock 5 which has slightly fewer rooms), and the Cayley Flats look, well, awful.

OK, Rutherford has the Whitworth tower. The rooms may be incredibly old but they're some of the biggest single rooms on campus and have really nice carpets and pretty new cupboards, etc, in them.

Long story short - Rutherford's great  It's more or less in the middle - 10 minutes or less walk to most places on campus.

Personally I don't really see the difference between the catered halls in the student village aside from Elvyn (which is clearly much older). And I wouldn't recommend Faraday if you mind getting 'Faragay, ****, ****, ****' yelled at you for most of the first few weeks...

I think Cayley is the smallest of the catered halls in The Village, with Elvyn (and then either Faraday or Royce) being largest.

It's a small price to pay, for a better Lufbra experience  You want a hall with a reputation? Go Faraday

Might not be such a good reputation though :p:

Did I say it was a good one  lol

But seriously, I'm sure everybody has wonderful things to say about their halls. Just take on board the important bits, and the best thing you can do is get a look at them too on open days

No matter which hall you get in to, you'll have a great time.

But rutherford is one of the better ones

From what my friends in Rutherford say, it is a rather good halls, although personally I think you should go for Royce!
Farday and Rutherford (the ones I've been in) you kinda go through a main door to just your block and then there's like little section of 3 doors or so, and you only see people if you GO to see them (if that makes sense). I like that Elvyn is a long corridor and connected to the next block. We always have our doors open and wonder to each other's room and it's kinda more friendly which I like

That's for the ensuite and shared ensuite blocks.

The shared bathroom blocks (in Rutherford, blocks 5, 15, 16, and 17) have the long corridors (although less in 15, 16 and 17, due to the design of the blocks).

That's just dependent on who you are living with though, which is luck of the draw. I mean, next year Elvyn could be really unsociable, or everyone in the Holt might have a personality (okay maybe not on the last one:wink:).
I never said it didn't depend on the people...but with Elvyn the opportunity's there. With those rooms in Rutherford and Faraday it isn't really, no matter how sociable you are
DC is like that, just long corridors (unless you live in the tower blocks!), and it can be more sociable... just need sociable people to live there!

hmm i disagree totally with that point, im in one of those blocks and its really sociable, we all have our doors open and wander into each others rooms all the time, we also have a nice little foryer thing where we all sit, i spose with a long corridor it is more opportunity to be sociable, but just cos we dont have those doesnt mean our blocks arent

Long corridors = corridor cricket

I'm in one of the ensuite blocks this year, the ones with all the fire doors (and a long-corridor block last year), and the ensuite as as sociable as the long-corridor was last year. You just have to walk through more doors to get to someone's room!

On the plus side, if someone down the other end of the corridor has their music on a bit too loud and you want to work, the fire doors help to deaden the sound a bit.
