Maybe you haven't, did you count correctly? I think it would be obvious if you had done 8 :P

"part of the uni" It sounds like some sort of dictatorship which slowly takes all your possesions.. perhaps i dont want to go!?

Reply 181

hmm.... P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, R1, R2 -- nah.. tis 8 after all :p:

hehehe.... nah, its just that our work belongs to the university now (they ask us for our work when they want it)- you know, in case they want examples to show the ickle first years

Reply 182

aww aren't I (possibly) fortunate! it's gona be weird being "ickle"
I just realised I'm doing the same A levels as you! I was starting to get the impression I would be the only one without physics!

Reply 183

lol.. no you will be surprised to hear that not many people took any of sciences for that matter! -- coz the course wasn't subject specific remember? - truly annoying it was coz you had people who came in with things like IT, and here we did bio and stuff!...

heheh... being ickle is fun though - for one thing, first year doesn't count towards your degree! - this time next year I will definitely be under pressure!

Reply 184

Yea I know it's not subject specific but i thought the majority would have taken art and maths or physics, and it seems everyone does physics... I don't mind Biology it just takes learning, Chemistry is horrific though its like algebra but with rules like x can't add to y because it's not positive enough, and it seems the answer is ALWAYS different! and I don't like C3 and C4 so much... Can't wait until next year! it will be relaxing.. in that its fun and its ok if i make a mistake and i get to use lots of cardboard!

Reply 185

lol cardboard will soon become your best friend  make sure you find some cheapo way of getting your hands on some - coz you can't always buy some! your money will just run out! heh
yeah - chem was a nightmare - I get what you mean - covalent and ionic bonding - argh - always with a little of both :s-smilie: tres odd

excited to come to sheffz this year then? :p:

Reply 186

yes muchly! Definately want to be there, my back up is Queens Belfast but I don't want to stay here, everyone stays so its likely I'd just be with the same people as I was at school. Sheffield seems a great place to be, everyone was friendly (based on the open day anyway!) and the course is one of the best and it's not too expensive so why would I go anywhere else? (hehehe you could use me as an advert...)

Reply 187

*steals Dust's words and copyrights them for Sheffield University advertising purposes*

hehe.. glad to know that you really liked the uni  - and yes, the people are friendly :p: you will enjoy the course muchly! - that's true - thats mainly why I wanted to go to a university that was out of my way - heheheh-- waaaaay out, I'm internationl :proud: hehe.. but it was because of the reasons you mentioned -its nice to start anew and make more and better friends

Reply 188

Yea, also, I guess it's the same everywhere, but I find here people form groups and get set in them, and I want to go somewhere that there isn't that environment. People in NI generally go to one of 2 universities so the groups stay the same. I think universities in England and Scotland have a much bigger mix of people.(getting a little off topic woops!)

So yes, Sheffield! I meant to ask (maybe i did and forgot?) what were the "themes" or subjects of your projects this year? (sorry if it was asked before!)

Reply 189

lol.. errr let me see:

P1 - home truths
P2 - kings and assemblers
P3 - room archeology
P4 - place-making
P5 - matter reality
P6 - a house of sorts
R1 - Architects and materials
R2 - Materials project

yes coz those themes make so much of sense! :p:

Reply 190

No not really :/ Do yo ave to design a building at the end of each? I have a friend who does architecture and they had some projects which were just making more sculptural shapes that don't neccessarily work as buildings, it seemed strange to me...

Reply 191

P1 - yes, P2 - kinda (we had to use cardboard to design objects like: a lamp, table etc), P3 - no, more on representation of a space, P4 - you get a client and have to design a building for him (individual work), P5 - design a place of conversation (we designed and built on site a shelter made out of timber), P6 - meet the client, get the requirements, design for him (individual)

Reply 192

the whole idea of a client sounds scary! I think i remember it being mentionned at the open day thing though, do they ever decide to use anyone's designs (even to develope the idea)?

Reply 193

lol nah -- they just tell you whether its suitable or not at the final review

Reply 194

Aw It would be cool to have your idea used for an actual building, it seems intimidating they expect you to be ready to design by that stage after less than a year! surey theres a huge amount to be taken into acount that you woun't know until later years?

Reply 195

well you would be surprised - my review went well  - After one year you tend to think of things in a totally different perspective and you actually have learnt a lot from lectures and past projects that enable you to do well in the individual projects.
And yes, there is some stuff that they won't expect you to know and they don't include that in the project briefs - but then again, that's what first year is about - to show what you are capable of, and to learn all the basics:smile:

Reply 196

Congratulations with your review!
I really can't wait, I think it will be a challenge for me because with art I never draw buildings and I'm not used to making card models (I do make a lot out of wire though). But the course is so different from anything else and it's so interesting! Oh another question (you probably want me to shut up now...) are there any trips to other countries or to other cities or day trips round Sheffield even?

Reply 197

lol don't worry mon amie.. I was just like you. No experience what so ever. I learnt everything this year -- this is reflected in my post for the interview that badboy put up here :proud:
It just takes practice and determination  that's all

Yes - 2nd year there is a trip  -- woo yah! no info on that as yet for us though, but I do know that the present second year went to rotterdam

lol - don't worry, I don't mind answering anything - plus point in the course, you finish before everyone else -- I have been done since friday

Reply 198

Does that mean we should assume we would be heading somewhere else?
(I'd love to be finished, still have 5 exams! :frown: )

Reply 199

do you mean that you get a trip? - then yes

(good luck )
