I was really impressed at the open day on wednesday 7th!

I loved Sheffield as a place - it was bigger, had more to do, and was much prettier than I expected. The friendliness, and cheapness (50p buses for students! and there were posters up complaining about the prices because it's a fare rise!) were a definite plus.

The first year looks really cool as well, I love the no-pressure "marks from your first year don't really count" attitude, so that everyone gets onto a level playing field. And the fact that they prepare you for the realities of working as an architect - group work, client based projects. I'm already really excited by the projects. The studios seemed cramped, but they're apparently fixing that this year, and they were really laid back about the random painting on the walls, and chairs, and grafitti, like "I love facebook" (another plus point - like minded people!).

So, basically I can't wait...

glad you liked the look of the place, but it has to be said that most of what you described re: course content is true at a lot of uk universities. i don't know of many places where first year counts towards your part I - they try to encourage you to "go free" in most uk universities in year one before reigning you back.

Reply 44

Yeah, most unis only expect you to get 40% to pass the first year. (obviuously its wise to try and do better tho:smile:)

Yeah, that makes sense.

They did spell out a couple of differences between other schools, sometimes even saying "if you're after that, Nottingham/the Bartlett/etc is more your place", but every time, I was on the Sheffield side. It honestly surprised me because I expected to have to compromise/be disappointed more looking around somewhere that wasn't my first choice, and only became a serious option after a rejection from UCL and a look round Cardiff.

(obviuously its wise to try and do better tho)

lol, thanks for the heads up

Wackysparkle - I met you? Wow! I was wearing a red hoodie and have short black hair. And am a girl. Who were you?

okay so our first year doesn't count towards out degree - but i don't think that really coz of the amount of work we get! -- i finally have a free weekend this time - quite foreign to me
for exams we are expected to get 38% to pass = but thats for all courses so in other words - don't think that just because its your first year you can go crazy - coz i really don't think so!

321beep: uni hoodie all the way! -- but i think you were in one of my other friend's groups - i vaguely remember you

sorry, i didn't mean "go free" in the sense of not doing anything and larking around - i meant it in the sense you are encouraged to explore design styles at most uk universities in your first year of architecture.

Reply 48

Yeah, they dont want you worried about specifically getting high marks etc. Tis a good idea:smile:

Reply 49

oh okay

then i agree with you in some sense
for example: in some projects we are given some vague requirements so that we can as you wil "expan our horizons" heh -- but cRaig is right - they aren't expecting fantasticaly high marks coz they know that you are just starting out realy and you need to still find out what is needed for the course and exactly what you need to bring to the table ----increase your creativity basicaly

are you going to be there on th 21st of Feb. for the open day?

No-one concerned that Sheffield didn't ask for any evidence of artistic ability before offering a place? I could be visually retarded for all they know, doesn't take any real skill to get an A at Higher (AS-Level) Art!

Haven't heard anything from them apart from 2x offers at AAA.

Hmmmmmmm........

Reply 52

hey! Art AS isn't a basket of roses!

ooh - aint there! sorry! -- i will be there on march 7th though

Hi everyone.

I got a letter from Sheffield dated Jan 22nd asking me to send a portfolio and im sending it tomorrow.

Will the fact i'm sending it almost a month later in any way have a detremental effect on my application to Sheffield?

Cheers.

Reply 54

well was there a deadline? if there wasn't one i don't see why it should - have you already got an offer?

Reply 55

No there wasn't a deadline set, and no they havn't yet given me an offer.

Reply 56

hmm - one of my friends had to give in a portfolio as well - she said that she handed it in about this time - but she had a deadline --- just to make sure -- call them up and ask --- i am sure that you aren't in a mess - coz if there was a deadline you can tell them that they failed to include one

Reply 57

do you know a girl called Hannah Baker? she's in 1st yr at sheffield...

Reply 58

hmm - don't recall - she maybe in the other studio - coz there are 2 for 1st years -- and i think the fact that there are 150 of us maybe a problem

Lol, i got a letter in November and sent my portfolio off only about two or three weeks ago (whoops) with a fairly apologetic letter.

I got an offer about a week later.

Still, how stupid was I to send it so late?! The thing is I had already got a portfolio, I just had some kind of mental block about reducing it to A4 and sending it. When I did get round to it I made it all pretty with ribbon and nice layout/ title page/ contents etc.
