Well last year (pretty sure WS said it was the same the year before) they sat us down in small groups, got everyone to say their name and where they come from, and then asked if anyone there wanted to show what they'd done in their sketch journals. nobody did and that was the end of it. It depends on the tutors though, some of them might have picked people out, but not everyone had done them, and they dont have to be anything particularly mind blowing in terms of content. Just do some sketches of things you find interesting (doesn't really have to be architecture), it's good practice after a summer without drawing and starts off your sketch book so it's a bit less scary opening a blank book on day 1

what are sheffields opinions on students who dont offer a-level art or DT?
I do biology, chemistry, maths and history. Are they willing to accept portfolios or prefer students with a qualification in an art/dt subject?

Oh and I'm starting integrated studies and there is a course called artworks, basically about paintings, sculptures etc... (cant remember what else), but the teacher said it is good for people considering architecture. Is it and should i do it so i can write about it on my PS?
Cheers

Those subjects should be a good combination for Shef's, they'll ask for a portfolio if you don't have Art but I dont think it's a drawback, as long as you can show drawing ability they wont think another thing of it. Have never heard of artworks (or integrated studies) I'm afraid so I can't really comment on that but if this is as well as A levels make sure you aren't giving yourself too much work! You might have the brains but art related course take up so much time. I'd say it would be evidence of your artistic ability so if you think you can cope then you might as well give it a go, and definately mention it on your PS. You could call the admissions tutors for advice if doing the course would mean you don't need a portfolio? Or you could use the work from it as your portfolio.

i would like to know more about the MArch in Architecture & MArch in Architecture and Town Planning course offered at University of Sheffields.

about the university...(reputation,rankings...etc.)
hows the course like.... & comparison to other collges in UK
course duration.... international student intake..scholarships..etc
city life...
any personal experiences....

if you can get in touch with some students from that course & let me know...

Firstly check the course requirements on the Sheffield Website - I think the deadline is April for the September 09 course.

I do know one student on the MArch course, so I will see if I can get in touch with her.

The university is ranked pretty high right now, which is a reflection of the change from AAB to AAA in grade requirements.
I don't want to comment on the course as I have not experienced it and so will ask my friend - but from what I see on a daily basis really the course is superb coz you get Live projects where you can relate directly to clientelle as well as deal with a realistic project.
There are international scholarships - again, check the sheffield website for details on this, there are departmental as well as country-specific scholarships.
City life - the university is integrated with the city, and so students are everywhere! There are bars, restaurants, shopping mall (by tram), shopping districts, clubs, close by banks and supermarkets, sandwich outlets, salon - really speaking everything is within walking distance if you're in the city - and they are all walking distance to the main uni campus.
Personal experience - I've been in sheffield for 2 years now, and I think its a very friendly and multi-cultural place where crime is incredibly low and its a place where you could walk alone on the main city street at about 10 or even 11pm and you would still feel safe and comfortable.
The new development would be the Ic (Information commons), a massive resource centre, with thousands of books for all departments, seating areas to suit all requirements like: silent study, group work, classrooms (with LCD TVs in), computers and printers on every floor.

thanks for the speedy reply wackysparkle....
i have seen the website...its actually one of the best websites for international students...& is of great help too....

but i just cannt judge the unniversity by the wbsite....
thats the reason y i wanted to know it from the students studying there....its always safer to know things from students from the same university....

waiting to hear from you....

Everything depends on your statement really, its good you have the grades though! That is a plus point and so is the duke of edinburgh (good mention in your PS - you can talk about teamwork, leadership etc)

I would recommend that you focus on your statement really - everyone has a chance if they have the grades and passion, it's whether you are able to convey that passion in your statement

Thanks!...i hope i have conveyed my passion in my PS as i sent it on the 25th of September...i got an acknowledgment from Sheffield today and they said they want to see my portfolio so...fingers crossed! XD

Reply 675

I got a request for my portfolio too! Do they ask for them from everyone, or is it just those with good predicted grades and personal statements?

dunno...but i hope we are the special people...i got asked for a task at UCL as well..where else did you apply?

Reply 677

Bath, Manchester, Liverpool, Plymouth.

I hope we're the special ones too!

Reply 678

I didn't get asked for a portfolio just got an offer

It actually depends really - some get asked to review portfolios if they didn't do art for example.

Reply 679

Will they ask for a portfolio from someone they're not really interested in, though?
