well you wouldn't know if they aren't interested in you or not until they reject you would you?

Reply 681

No, but would they receive an application and automatically ask for a portfolio, even if they can tell from the PS that they don't want you?

Reply 682

no, like I said in my last last post - I got an offer without being asked for a portfolio.

Reply 683

same

Its so difficult to tell from a mere personal statement whether or not someone is going to be good at architecture (which is why they're putting more emphasis on portfolio's these days) and for them to cancel you out straight away, you must have a really crap PS, and i don't think many applicants to Sheffield Architecture are going to have crap personal statements.... so in reality the bit i've quoted would seldom happen. I think the answer to your question is that anyone that they want to see a portfolio from, they'll ask for... doesn't mean they're favouring you in anyway i shouldn't think. Just means that they can't/won't give you an offer without seeing some of your work first.

Reply 684

Exactement RocketTown - I think the asking for a portfolio is dependent on a number of reasons really like: you haven't done an art-related A level, or maybe haven't done Art at GCSE even - or it could be because they are really interested in what you've said in your PS and just want to verify.

Hello All!
Long time Wackysparkle, how is 3rd year life? Hope it's going well!
How's first year going RocketTown? Glad you came to Sheffs?

Reply 686

third year in one word is torture
So much of work!! aaahhh...

How's second year treating ya? :p:

Reply 687

hey Dust, yeah first year @ Sheff is going awesome. Got our review for the Room Archaeology project on friday which should be a laugh. I'm really enjoying it, the tutors seem nice enough (and seem to know enough, aswell) and all the other first years are really cool. I really like Bryan Lawsons lectures (though i've missed the last one). I love really intelligent people so i'm instantly attracted to profs. My history lecturer however doesn't really excite me much, i'm just not really into her style of lecturing... and reckon i could learn more from reading and researching it on my own... so i may start skipping that one. Its a bit of a shame aswell as architectural/general history is something i'm really into. The sciency lecture is all good as its mostly revising my alevel physics syllabus.

I'm loving the whole studio atmosphere, basically reminds me of my a level art atmosphere but more interesting/sophisticated and i actually feel like i'm walking away having learnt stuff. Basically i'm really enjoying it! its a nice feeling when you're learning in a top class school and you can really tell.

Wackysparkle, sorry i havn't done many PS's... i suck at time management. I'm just trying to get on top of everything at the moment

3rd year=torture??
I'm not so thrilled with 2nd year yet, Not really a big fan of mapping although I did get a good line out of it so it wasn't too bad but the presentation just didn't seem to go the right way. P2 is a bit too vague, no proper details of what should be in our structure, not sure how far I'm meant to resolve (as far as possible i guess...), not sure of where the site boundaries are etc etc. What have your projects been?

Glad you're enjoying it Rocket Town, have to agree Lawson lectures were great, havent seen him this year though :frown: How are the projects going? you enjoying them? I saw most of the P1 models cos we were in 1st year studio while the RIBA exhibition was on, there was a surprising amount of cellophane! Seems you were all more inventive than what my group ended up with, we spent so long arguing it just looked like a normal house :frown:

Might dander round the studios tomorrow lunchtime,so keep an eye out

well I use the term loosely :p: - depends on my mood and at what stress level I'm at!
Last week was chaotic as I had to visit my site over the weekend last minute, and do some assignments for that as well as do another task and produce an assignment for that as well all for Tuesday - so I had to do that from Friday to Monday and juggle day long lectures as well! ewwww

project is going alright now I guess - have a tutorial tomorrow, it just depends on how much work I get done right now!

Hmm.. not so sure what to make of Lawson in my opinion - dont worry dust, you get him back in second semester and then you'd hate him coz he has an exam right in the middle of portfolio and assignment hand-ins
Not so sure about him though, his concepts are quite good and some are obvious really - and when you get to second and then third year you find that there are some better lecturers really who talk about what is necessary and to the point... far better really in my opinion.

You taking a gander round the third year studio? :flute:

Yeah i just really like the way he lectures, the points he makes aren't really amazing or anything because i've read his books but i think he presents stuff in a nice way.

haha sounds like my P1 ended up a lot like yours, and P2 reviews tomorrow which should be errr... fun. We'll have to meet up at some point, and i can pick your brain

Definately not looking forward to third year now!
I went round 3rd year yesterday but it was completely empty! well there was some work but not a single person, was it lecture day? I saw a really nice map following people somewhere, other than that I couldn't really make sense of stuff. What day is a better time to visit?

Didn't go to first year cos I thought you might shoo me away with reviews being today. saw some of you putting up a display this morning though. Hope the review goes well

And exams in the middle of portfolio reviews? :frown:

Reply 692

ah I don't want to make you run away from third year by any means!
Tutorials are going pretty well for me right now - and there have been so many site visits so far (cleethorpes) but it's going good. I think it just gets annoying when there's a sudden built up of work all on one day!!

Erm.. I'm not so sure which side that was on, but our bit of the studio is as soon as you enter..
Yesterday was lecture day between 10-12 and so no tutorials and minus people about really.
Tutorial days are on Tuesday and Friday... so that would be your best chance really to have a walk about.
Just look out for me if you wants to talk about third year or something

Last year's timetable:
P5 reviews
one week later - portfolio submission
Next day - Bryan Lawson Exam
3 days later - CAD submission

That was quite hectic! - we complained so you never know, you might have gotten it changed a little this year!

Reply 693

review went quite well cheers... really enjoyed it.

wackysparkle, whats your project on Cleethorpes about?

Reply 694

It's temporary housing project - can even be a hotel, could be a BnB etc
We are still in the preliminary stages so we're exploring what is needed in the area and what the area is about. Very interesting approach to a design project.

Ah you must be starting P3 - hmm.....I wonder what you'll get coz last year we got one that was actually an ongoing design competition in Manchester... let me know what you get!

Reply 695

I went into the studio and turned right, the map was on the wall in a cornery bit, i think...I'll maybe visit again on tuesday to see what you've been doing (really should have done that last year!)
(was the "starting P3..." directed at me?) P2 for me doesnt end until thursday, its based on the Urban Splash Infobox competition (it was in an issue of the AJ so you might have heard of it?) so I think our P3 will be the same as last years, we've been told what the site will be and we have to design P2 as a marketing sweet for P3 and as a library for our P1. Your P3 was the Tutti Frutti comp. right? I remember seeing the finished "street", it looked awesome. I hope that's what we get anyway!
Good luck with P3 RocketTown, if it's what we had you better start learning to love cardboard!

that sounds really interesting. is it just your group doing a project based in cleethorpes or is it a whole year thing?

Nope, basically in third year you get an intro from the 6 tutors and you list in order of preference which one you'd like to do.
You get sorted through into the groups and you basically go for the project as normal with the given tutor.
Our project is based in Cleethorpes - and so far its been really good, getting a lot done and the design process is actually quite interesting this time round coz its approaching the project in a different way to previous projects.

Yup - we did the manchester tutti frutti project dust - cool..urban splash! That must be quite good!.. let me know how it comes along, quite curious as to how you guys approach it and whether its different to how we did it.

ah right awesome... i'm popping up to the 3rd year studio to have a nosey around because i was born and raised in Cleethorpes. Dan Jary said i should sit in your tutorials or something, but i'd just like to have a look at what you're all up to/how stuff gets done in 3rd year.

So if you see a lost looking first year, feel free to say hello.
oh and when exactly are your tutorials? and when's the final review for it?

Reply 699

awesome!! -- Can I use you for my project then? :flutter:.. I'm actually going to Cleethorpes tomorrow coz I need to have a wander round some sites - pretty cool if I could speak with you on the ins and outs of Cleethorpes if you get the chance!

Tutorials are on Tuesdays and Fridays - depends really coz we sign up for them. They run from morning to late afternoon and we're the ones as soon as you walk into the studio (right in the well!) and our tutor is Satwinder (who is the head of Third year). Hahaha.. well sure thing, shall walk around and look for a lost soul..

We have interims next week on Tuesday, and finals are at Christmas - I would say lucky me... but the brief is :eek2:
