Wackysparkle that sounds such a strange approach, you basically choose what you build, as long as it fits the brief and you have a reason? Will have to go see whats going on on friday!
Infobox ends thursday, it has been fun vut not sure how happy i am with my building thus far. It's so unresolved! We only had 2 weeks though so I'm guessing we aren't expected to have everything sorted.
Come visit second year too RocketTown! We have our reviews on thursday so it might be interesting, or you could wait until next week and P3 starts. What project are you on now?

lol - you will soon see that design isn't all about just producing a building - its about the idea of space and how they connect. The brief gives us requirements like: no. rooms, type of rooms etc - but we need to be able to understand the site and the area of cleethorpes before we can just go ahead and design it
I guess I'm not too good at explaining it, and now I understand when people say you can't really describe what 'space' is
Yup - you're welcome to come in

Reply 702

wackysparkle - yeah i'll pop up and we can have a chat about cleethorpes haha, and i'll try and answer as many of your questions as i can. It'll be really interesting to see where/what you're designing. I might come up to see one or two 2nd year reviews tomorrow (dust, do you know what time yours is?) and then carry on up to the Well to see if i can find you.

Dust - we've just started our P3 which is the "Designers, Kings and Assemblers" one. Our group got pretty good feedback for our P2 installation so were going a bit risky with P3, with aspirations of designing a childrens adventure playground type thing (its basically steps going up, a bridge bit and a slide going down. maybe a climbing frame somewhere) which is designed in the subway near the odeon, for little kids to play on when they're waiting for their film to start etc. Then if we have and spare card we'll make a bench or something for parents to sit and keep an eye on their kids. haha, none of it will probably work but i'm really not too bothered... just gonna go for it. Our buzzword is 'delight' and our space is anything but delightful.

Oh yeah, and i thought i'd mention my name's Dan (can't remember if i had already) just so neither of you have to call me RocketTown in real life haha

wooo that' immense, we can have a cleethorpes discussion
Well, I'm not free tomorrow or Friday coz we have 2 long studio days ugh! I am free however on Monday between 10-2?
Hopefully my work does look good :o:---still initial stages of design.

hahah.. well I'll keep that in mind, but I don't really say my name out loud online, so I guess I'll PM you once we've sorted out a meet up

Reply 704

i have spare time on most days except mondays which is my lecture day haha...any other day should be alright though.

Reply 705

hmmm that's annoying! erm.. I think I should be having wednesday off (we normally have it off but I end up doing work :p:) - I'll let you know if/when I'm free
Thanks!

Reply 706

i went up to your studio yesterday WS, but there was no one to be found... i was looking at the photo collage though, looks cool!

Reply 707

lol that's prolly coz it was lectures day and pre-interim! we were all working either in the computer rooms or at home, and a few scattered all over really.
the montage was based on how to represent your ideas and relying on memory for it (so we chose an early memory).. then we were told that we were responsible for creating future memories... and so it helped us understand how to create visuals really.

Tis unfortunate no one was around though!... pretty hectic right now, so I doubt if I or some others would be able to see you before reading week. But before you do go in there just let me know so I can check to see if I'm free

Reply 708

i'm pretty busy till after reading week now anyway, but i always pop in and out of all the other studio's lol (usually on my way to or from getting a tea/coffee from upstairs  ) but yeah, next time your free let me know and i'll see if i'm free as well.

hey

i am in uni of sheffield right now, first year architecture. Just thought that if anyone needed to know any info about the course they could ask!

Wackysparkle:wink:

hey, ta for opening yourself up to a myriad of questions from anxious freshers including me! really useful so thanks!

i just wondered about the assessment - how is your work marked? what percentage of people get a 2.1 or 1st class? is 1st class a ridiculous thing to aspire to as an archi undergrad?

i want to try and learn italian/get involved in enterprise activities and such... i know architecture is really full-on in terms of time so do you reckon doing lots of extra stuff is possible?

any info would be awesome, cheers.

no problem, I'm here to help:smile:

There are two types of assignments: lecture based + project based.
The former is assessed via exams + assignments, the latter is based upon a set criteria.
This year the percentage of 2.1 and 2.2 were pretty much even, there were more fails this year however and there was only a handful of 1sts. There were 120 on the course.

I would suggest that if you wanted to do the extra stuff you will only be able to do it in first year and part of second year to be honest. Most of my friends even quit their jobs second 1/2 of second year + all of third year. Some resorting to only working on Saturdays.
This is because the course is demanding and you will be working quite consistently.

If you have any other questions jus let me know.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of applying to Sheffield Architecture this year... it's my last year of school.

Any advice? :o:

Advice... make sure your portfolio is very good cause they do ask for it. and it's ten pages. Cant give much more advice on admissions cause it will be tough anyways but just sell yourself i guess, standard advice! Admissions to uni nowadays is so competitive so just give yourself the best chance you can.

Its not advice as such but: I'd say I've found the whole admissions process at Sheffield really good.. i applied to other unis last year and their support/feedback and info systems were shoddy in comparison. Get the feeling theyre on the ball in Sheff so yeah, I'd recommend! Yet to start the course yet though...!!

I withdrew, couldn't wait any longer. Having waited for several months, only to be told that they couldn't open 10 individual jpegs and to send them a power point (apparently to reduce compatibility problems - althought surely the chances such problems are higher with a power point?) I just thought, screw this.

I'm sure I'm the only one who experienced this, lol, but still. I didn't want to comprimise getting decent accomodation at Cardiff as it was so late on in the applications proceedure!

I dont know if anyone has any advice for portfolios?.. I do a lot of photography, but im not sure if i should include that in my portfolio, or if it would be likely to be more benificial to do more drawing, painting e.t.c work instead?.. Im really worrying about what to do for my portfolio right now! :s-smilie:

Hi there,

when it comes to the portfolio, variety is good! Include anything creative as Sheffield encourage art in any form, and photography will definitely be welcome
you can include the photographs, I'd say that you should also have some hand drawn stuff, painting as well so that you can express variety.

Architecture to begin with is a competitive course to get into, and Sheffield is by no means an exception having rasied its entry requirements recently.
I really liked the Sheffield design ethos as it was more on the 'creative' side. Furthermore, the course is integrated and taught with engineer architects, landscape architects etc and so you really get an idea of what architecture is all about as you get the big picture.

The design projects were enjoyable as there were extremes in all types, and in each year of the course you will be taking at trip! Also, the lectures were really inspiring, as they crossed into urban design as well, as a personal interest of mine, and also into architectural history. And Sheffield does have some elite lecturers!

I can really go on and on about the course at Sheffield, and if I were to be objective I'd jus say that it's the second best right now for it, and that's saying a lot!
