Hello

I'm currently studying Structural Engineering and Architecture (hence the username) at University of Sheffield. I'll be starting my 2nd year in a few weeks and if anyone has any questions about Sheffield, Architecture, Civil and Structural Engineering or my dual course then I'd be happy to answer them, in this thread or by private message if you prefer.

Advice... make sure your portfolio is very good cause they do ask for it. and it's ten pages. Cant give much more advice on admissions cause it will be tough anyways but just sell yourself i guess, standard advice! Admissions to uni nowadays is so competitive so just give yourself the best chance you can.

Its not advice as such but: I'd say I've found the whole admissions process at Sheffield really good.. i applied to other unis last year and their support/feedback and info systems were shoddy in comparison. Get the feeling theyre on the ball in Sheff so yeah, I'd recommend! Yet to start the course yet though...!!

Architecture to begin with is a competitive course to get into, and Sheffield is by no means an exception having rasied its entry requirements recently.
I really liked the Sheffield design ethos as it was more on the 'creative' side. Furthermore, the course is integrated and taught with engineer architects, landscape architects etc and so you really get an idea of what architecture is all about as you get the big picture.

The design projects were enjoyable as there were extremes in all types, and in each year of the course you will be taking at trip! Also, the lectures were really inspiring, as they crossed into urban design as well, as a personal interest of mine, and also into architectural history. And Sheffield does have some elite lecturers!

I can really go on and on about the course at Sheffield, and if I were to be objective I'd jus say that it's the second best right now for it, and that's saying a lot!

Thank you for the replies, they helped out a lot!

My portfolio mainly consists of freehand sketches... should I widen my range a bit more? I have a few oil paintings that I wouldn't mind adding but I figured that maybe sketching would be considered stronger portfolio material.

I might be completely wrong here but I was led to believe that they're looking more at creativity rather than technical ability, past a certain point, and that a broad range of things in your portfolio is better than all work being one style/technique.

I'm not yet a student though, I'm applying this year, so don't put too much weight on my opinion.

Yes you're right in that respect. And to reinforce what you've said, they are mainly looking for creative skills, however, demonstration ability in both your technical and creative work is even better, hard thing is finding the right balance and knowing how to display it.

As for 'broad range of skills', they don't mean for you to show that you can create something in abstract and then follow something completely different in a cubist direction. They want to see less repetition and more things (created, drawings, paintings, writing...) that will spark their attention and evokes interesting discussion based on it. For example if you've painted a canvas using liquefied metals or tinned food from your kitchen shelf for whatever reason, then it gives room for a lot of questions- motives, intention, does it guard some sort of an encrypted system, are there any obscured political implications to be discerned from it and so on... and above that, they want you to demonstrate that you can apply these skills of yours and creative ways of thinking to more than just one category.

Having a lot of freehand drawings and bringing plenty of sketchbooks to show your line of thought is definitely a must.

I can vouch for Sheffield -
the Architecture course at Sheffield is highly competitive and to be honest I'd say that you do need the required AAA to get considered.

yeah guess so...shame, picking a space would've been good, although would've taken up more time at the beginning.

What does the P3 project Designers, kings and assemblers involve?

Is that the one where one person does the drawings and then another person has to build the model, to test communication skills? or is that something else?

my P2 space last year was the grotty underpass near the odeon cinema... twas a horrible, piss soaked, needle ridden place with crazy homeless people around. I didn't really enjoy measuring walls down there haha... I guess it was a good experience though. P3 was interesting (I designed a kids slide) and P4 as the first real design/crit type project was a bit nerve wracking, but also quite interesting.

I dont know why i'm sharing this information, I haven't talked about architecture in a while so just felt like it

Don't think anyone has that space for P2 this year (I'm assuming it was allocated and you didn't choose it).

So are P3 and P4 both individual projects rather than group ones?

Reply 738

oh.. didn't realise you left the course rockettown! What happened? :frown:

I *think* P4 was individual and P3 was group :s-smilie:...I can't really remember!

Hey wackysparkle...

I just realised I needed to stop studying architecture for my own creative sanctity. It was completely destroying my love of making art for its own sake, and instead made my brain believe that everything revolved around a deadline. I felt myself starting to hate art and design, and decided to stop myself before I completely ruined it for, well, myself. I consider it a good decision. Anyway, I decided to following some of my other passions. Luckily for me I have quite a few

Are you on your year out now? Hows that going?
