but you should get the ticket now! -- prices sky rocket otherwise

yeh, im going to the open day next week, and i dont know how to get there,im going by myself, will i be the only one by myself? my parents cant come, should i bring a friend with me?
i just dont know what to expect

Reply 82

lol - don't worry - you have to take the train from where ever you are - and its only about 15mins from the sheffield station to the union. Again, e-mail me your addy and i will send you details

If you want you can bring a friend - on the last open day it was parents + students that came. But, at least if you bring a friend you won't feel overwhelmed ......... you shouldn't realy though - nothing to freak out about  ---

There will be a talk from the tutors - and then it will be us students who will show you around

UCL usually take for ever to reply - they were like that for me - then they only gave me a reply in April!!! - they were the last uni!! + they rejected me!!!

come to Sheffield --

Reply 85

booked my ticket to sheffield today, is the train station near the university, i have no clue on how to get there from the train station!!

Reply 86

okay do this: get a cab  - if i explain it to you - you may get lost - and that would by a real bad situation for you!
The train station is about a 20 minute walk to the university - and i would most certainly confuse you if i gave you directions on getting there!

should cost you about 5-6 pounds via cab

Reply 87

ah - screw up at the open day - i was listed as an extra - so i didnt do it today!

Hope you guys enjoyed the tour though  and we managed to convince you to come here!

ooh and also - hope you guys were alright coming from the station to the uni?

Still a week before I head off, I'm starting to get quite excited now, I was wondering if on the open day do we get to see the student accomodation? (sorry if this was asked already I can't remember if I read it or not!)
I got sent a book about it in the post and it seems really good at Sheffield so I was just wondering if we get the opportunity to see it for ourselves. Although I can understand its during term time so people are probably living in it all...

Reply 89

just come back from the open day, it was good, the tours were good and quite convincing-people seemed nice, but we didnt get to see any of the accomodation, lol, that professer guy that spoke at the beginning was actualy discouraging us from going to sheffield!!
i ended up walking to the uni from the station, while asking for directions so many times!!
i loved those weird lifts that you had to jump on to, they were great!!
i didnt realise sheffield was so small

Reply 90

lol - sheffield aint that small actually - if you hop on one of the trams you will see just how big it is! --
discourging? :ninja: who was this???
At least you found the uni in the end  -- told you to get the cab! why didn't you?
the patinosters? - -yeahhhhh tis great! --we soo need t shirts that say: I survived the patinoster ---- long story :p:

Ah - in reply to yours and Dust's question: yes, the reason accomodation isn't shown is simply because people are still living there - the most you could have done is just seen the places of residence thats it --- but if you want info on those things- just let me know - and i shall do my best to provide

Reply 91

The book I got sent has lots of information, I was just wondering if they only show the nicest bits  Which accomodation area is the most practicle for an Architecture student?

Reply 92

I would say city site - coz you will find yourself carrying materials and models to and fro - and not only that - the long hours will find you going back at about 5-6 somtimes - and you wouldn't want to walk about 20 minutes in the dark off city - coz as soon as you go further away from the city - it just gets that less safe --- i don't mean this to apply to sheffield only - i mean it as a general understanding of cities
I'm not saying that accommodation is unsafe as you go further out by any means -- this is just me being a safety maniac!

plus there is the added advantage that if you oversleep you can still make your lectures  - it takes only bout 7-10 minutes to walk to the arts tower!

Reply 93

Im coming down on Wed to check the Uni out.... hope its gud, coz im seriously considering it seeing as i still havent heard from UCL.. Lol, i was gnna train it down, but then my dad decided he wanted to come with me, and then my mum wanted to come as well so we gnna drive down... lol, hopefully no more of my family will wnt to come and c the uni wiv me..

cant remember what he was called:confused:
i actualy arrived in sheffield realy early, and i wanted to walk to the uni since it was a sunny day
thats what they were called, the patinosters!!!they were soo scary, but i just had to go in one!! i was actualy wondering, if you dont get off it after the last floor what happens to you? lol
i realy liked the uni though, it was realy nice, i just thought the arts tower was too ugly to include the architecture department, well compared to cardiffs!
lol

Reply 95

lol - the arts tower is supposed to be inspired from the the seagram building  :p: - but i know what you mean! it needs a good clean -up which coincidentally is going on right now
ah - i see -- sunny day? when was that :p: heheh -
ohh - if i was your tour guide i woulda told you - basically the patinoster goes all the way to lower ground and goes to floor 18 - [there is a 19 but you have to go via the stairs]
think of it like a pulley system where the it goes up, bends and comes down - thats the patinoster - so there is a stage where you enter darkness and you are shifted sideways and come back up - :p: -- quite scary *ahem* especially if you didn't realise that it doesn't go to 19  -
Hopefully you liked the uni well enough to come next year then!

hmm: was it one of these people? : peter blundell jones, dan[iel] jary, steve sharples, judy torrington ---?
most likely the first one - coz he's head of school

Reply 96

lol that sounds like my first trip to sheffield Karam - more and more family members wanted to come -
oh - UCL always take forever to reply - i got my reply in april and they had rejected me! really annoying as i had already decided which uniz to go to and they weren't it - but i couldn't make the decision until i heard back! grrr

you will indefinately like sheffield - very multi-cultural - people are friendly, you get to see the patinoster in action :p: hehe - and the course is really great with a mixture of lectures and mainly studio time where you work in groups and such-- but there are 2 individual projects as well -
if you want any more info - i'm a PM away

Reply 97

I really want to see this patinoster thing now

Reply 98

aww --- you will luv it  - would take a photo for you - but that would spoil the fun!

Reply 99

I put sheffield as my firm! Can't wait for October!
