When shops think you are stealing

How many times have you experienced this?

I went in a small clothes shop today (maryjane) and I asked if I could try a top on and she said yea sure so I went in the changing cubicle, it fit but I thought Id try 2 other colours on to see which looked best and I heard the shop woman talking outside about the 'girl trying coats on'. I was only in for 1 minute when she knocked on the door and said 'are you alright in there'. I came out and as I walked to the till I noticed everyone staring. Its not like I was hogging the changing rooms or anything there was 2. I suppose it didn't help that I had a bag with me but im sure they thought I was stealing, this has happened a few times its so annoying!

I'm totally paranoid people think I'm stealing :s-smilie:

If I pick something up I have to hold and put it back really visibly so it doesn't look like I'm thieving. Not that I'm the thieving type of course. One time I had to go into W H Smiths carrying a folder I had just bought in another shop (and stupidly said I didn't need a bag, trying to save plastic) so I went up to the checkout before I went in and said "Look, I've bought this somewhere else. Just letting you know..." I felt so stupid

Anyways seems like they were pretty rude to me. Just don't give them your custom again.

Yes im totally paranoid too and sometimes if I walk out of a shop without buying anything Im concious of people thinking Ive stole something, so pretend to casually look at something in the shop and walk out gradually. I don't think this paranoi has anything to do with what happened today though.

Lol yes I'm exactly the same. If I don't buy anything I have to so carefully plan my way to the door so as not to look suspicious. We must look suspicious as hell though. What a pair.
id love someone to accuse me of stealing, id sue em for defremation of chrachter or soemthing as equally American as that.

OP tell em to go stuff themselves, if youve done nothing wrong the dont worry about it
I feel the same about walking out of a shop without buying anything - especially places like HMV where stuff is so easy to nick and a lot of stuff prob does get nicked (they have sec guards as well).

Problem is I like to check out all sorts of shops before I buy anything so most of the time I go in but don't buy.

My boyfriend once went into a shop and bought something. They gave him change for £10 and he said "Look, I'm sorry I paid with £5." Very honest of him. However, the assistant said they were sure it was £10. Anyway eventually they checked the CCTV and it was £10. Bless his heart, he wouldn't go in there again for embarrassment!
I'd have been buggered if that was me - I take FOREVER in changing rooms.

When I'm just walking round a store I am very careful that it doesn't look like I could be stealing. I'm friends with a security guard who has to slyly keep an eye on people from either the other end of the store or on security cameras because in all honesty a lot of theft goes on in there. He's busted a lot of criminals in the act and is a really good guard but of course he does sometimes make a mistake - he's not rude about it but some people do take offense. I wish they would understand that he's just doing his job and he's not outright accusing you of stealing; it's just that you must have done something (however accidentally) which looked suspicious. So I'm quite sympathetic with security guards these days

I know they're just doing their job and all, but I get so angry when I am treated like a criminal when I go somewhere to spend my money.

One time, this store had someone dressed in 'normal' clothing follow me around with a clipboard writing down everything I picked up. She was trying to be subtle about it, and I probably made myself seem worse by going into all these random isles to see if she would follow, but omg...I was SO close to telling her off/smacking her. Instead, I looked directly at her, put everything down one by one, and bought what I needed in a store across the street.

You went down isles on purpose, lol. People in shops turn into actors in fear of being accused!
Does anyone else get really paranoid about walking through the alarms at he entrance/exit to a shop? I get so scared of walking through them in case they go off, even though I know I haven't taken anything!

Yes

I used to work in Boots, one day I started setting off the alarms by the doors and I had no idea why - I sure hadn't stolen anything! I just tried to avoid the doors all day and hoped noone would notice but it really freaked me out!

Then I noticed a security tag stuck to my hair ;dry;
bunthulhu

Lmao! That really made me giggle :p:
I once walked out of Superdrug with an electronically tagged toothbrush in my hand. I was like oops, and put it back on the end of a till while everyone was looking at me standing in between the alarm sensor thing. It was quite funny.
Years ago, when i was about 12, i was on my own in Claires Accessories, and i happend to be the only person in the shop apart from this one lady. So.. I was looking at the necklaces coz wanted to get one for my mum for her birthday, and this old lady came over to me and said 'I know what you're doing, theres cameras up there you know..' and i being shy didnt say anything just sed 'huh?' quietly, and she said 'dont act all innocent with me young lady, the cameras are watching you'
And i got really scared of this lady so i walked away.
they lost a customer lol
