How to get rejected from a university?

My parents are making me apply for notts as my first choice as they want me to stay in my home town for university but say that if I get rejected I can go elsewhere.
I probably won't get into notts anyway as it's a Russell group but I was thinking I should mess up at my interview or something if I get that far.
Do you think this will work?

Never waste an opportunity to get far in something.

I think so. I have a friend who got rejected for the reason that "He lacks enthusiasm.", and that was during his interview. But, I highly discourage you to do that. Staying in your home town has its perks you know.
