The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Mrs Dalloway - Virginia Woolf.
Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier.
House of Incest - Anais Nin.

Those are my three favourite books!

However, you should also check out Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility), Ernest Hemingway (A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Moveable Feast), Jean Rhys (Wide Sargasso Sea, Good Morning Midnight), F. Scott Fitzgerald, (The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, The Beautiful and the Damned), John Steinbeck (noticed him on your list!), Ian McEwan (Atonement - another favourite actually), Zadie Smith (On Beauty, White Teeth), Charles Dickens (Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield - English classics!), Thomas Hardy, (Far From the Madding Crowd, Tess of the D'Urbervilles).
