Flu making me feel awful

I feel so crap.

Thursday evening and I was feeling fine - ironically, my friend even said I looked very healthy. Cut to an hour later and I'm coughing like mad.

That night I barely slept a wink - I was shivering so much, despite my hundreds of layers. Runny nose and sore throat etc. Lost appetite totally. Headache and aches and pains all over. Then I got reaaaaaaally hot and woke up drenched.

The next day I had a walk to the pharmacy to get some cough syrop, and I was so spaced out. I felt very faint and managed to make it inside in time before I fainted.

Now I'm still weak, got a horrible horrible cough, and my heart has been beating so fast since Thursday. I also am breathing really rapidly. :frown:

Is it just flu?

Don't really want to bother a doctor if there's nothing they can do.

Hey-sounds like you definitely have flu. OR, and this is very common amongst students, something horrible and viral. Go and see a doctor even if it's just to confirm it and get some antibiotics/prescribed bedrest. Honestly it's better to get it checked out now so it doesn't get worse. Get well soon!

poor fleecey :frown: :hugs:

sounds like its a flu... get one of those olbas nose inhalers, some cocodamol, some hot chocolate and lots of bedrest!

If it doesn't start to clear up shortly I'd probably harrass the doc too!

i had exactly the same thing you did fleece, still do a bit. it's the flu. they kept telling me strepsils and paracetamol + ibuprofen, but i went in after 4 days of the contant fever and the doc gave me amoxicillin. if you take 2 paracetamol and then an ibuprofen after about 30mins,should help the fever.just make sure you get lots of rest, fluids and you'll up and running in no time :hugs:

If you've been on anti-biotics a long time they diminish the immune system leaving you more susceptible to illnesses. Probably just flu, but doctors see this stuff all the time so you shouldn't be so concerned about bothering them as it's their job. Hope you feel better.

Cheers people. Lying in bed all day uncomfortably is so boring :frown: If only I could sleep. Get about 50 mins at a time :frown:

Yeah, I've only had proper flu once and it's awful - literally couldn't move I felt so week and lost a stone in body weight in a week as I couldn't drink anything without throwing it back up - then passing out. Pretty much the worst I'd ever felt! Energy-based drinks were really good towards the end of it though - helps restock your energy and fluid levels.

If it is the flu, there's not a great deal you can do unfortunately other than painkillers and paracetamol to keep your temperature down - as it's a viral infection anti-biotics have no effect (and I'm not sure the NHS hand out anti-viral solutions for non-bird flu!). A TV and a stack of DVDs with a helpful friend to restock your water levels is always nice though!

If you are feeling particularly awful though and you really can't get to the doctors because you feel so bad - as none of us here can properly diagnose you that it is flu - then you could always get a friend to call the emergency doctor. Get your friends to keep an eye out for you anyway (even from a safe non-infectable distance!).

Get well soon.

PS If you can, have a soak in the bath and change the sheets on the bed - spending over a week in my pyjamas sweating from fever doesn't make for easy sleeping.:s-smilie:

I've got something similar at the moment - not as bad as yours though!

If you have academic work to do, I suggest you see the doctor just in case you might need an extension to any deadlines or anything.

Otherwise, paracetamol and ibuprofen are the best you can do. I think paracetamol is the one which helps bring down a fever. And I think you can take both at once, but you can't take ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

Another thing you can do is steam inhalation. This is dead simple and it really works. Just fill a bowl with boiling water and stick your head over it, then cover it with a towel to trap the steam. If you have any tea tree or eucalyptus oil or similar (or a tiny bit of Vicks vaporub) put a drop or two in the water as well.

Also, last night my housemate gave me Benylin night and day tablets and the night one worked wonders. I feel much better today. But I'm not sure whether it's for flu, and I don't know what the active ingredient is. Definitely worked though.

Hope you get well soon.

You can also get those vicks vapor plug in things which seem to work pretty well. Basically plug it into a plug point and it releases menthol typey vapors to clear your nose (and it smells quite nice too )

As for medicines...sudofed is quite good and lemsip is meant to be good too (if you like the taste).

according to my uni,the flu is a minor illness and does not count as an extenuating circumstance. i had a freaking fever and migraine minus all the other things in the middle of the exam, nope nope, that doesn't count.

What morons.

When I was 17 one of my classmates died of flu.
