Pear shape. Possible to lose fat from the Thighs/bum?

I’m a pear shape, size 8-10 on top and 12 on bottom. Main problem is my huge thighs. I’d really like to be a smaller pear shape. I’m 5’6/7 and the scales say 10’5 this morning (think they are broken, at least I damn well hope they are) is that overweight for my height? I go to the gym three times a week and am cutting back and watching what I eat. I am fairly happy with my body, just the tops of my legs. Is it possible to lose weight from this area if you’re a pear shape?

Thanks for any help

Hayley my dear, it is not possible to loose weight from one particular part of your body, I don't know how many times this has to be said. If your body-fat percentage is already quite low then you can go to specific classes/do specific exercises to target thighs and arse. leg press machine etc, the machines in the gym I use show what muscles are being worked anyway. But I stay away from machines most of the time as they have limited uses. (leg press/lat pull down/bench decline benefit me most).

It's not possible to lose weight from a specific area but I've been told that if you lose weight and it comes off from really random places to begin with (like elbows and other really strange places) if you keep the weight off for a while the fat redistributes itself so its more sensible

However that might not necessarily be true

You probably can lose some weight from your thighs. I'm an hourglass and when I lost weight, some of it did go from my thighs but they're still big in comparison to the rest of my body.

If you want to lose weight on your thighs then do moderate exercises for long periods of time 3 times a week eg 40mins jogging. Also avoid doing things like squats, the rowing machine or heavy weights as that'll increase the size of your thighs. I would know, I accidently overused a weights machine and now have big muscles at the top of my thighs that I have no clue how to get rid of :frown:

Ignore this post Hayley, speak to the people at the gym. I promise you she is talking out of her arse. I work in a gym myself, and have been training hard/reading journals etc for 2 years, and although there is controversy on a lot of things, there are plenty of things that is just fact and that most sports scientists/personal trainers can prove/agree on. You do not need to avoid rowing and squats, lmao. In actual fact, rowing is an excellent exercise for legs and upper body and in your case excellent on a low resistance setting. Work hard at that/stepper/run, get the diet sorted, and you will soon see changes. Good luck.

You really don't have to be so rude you know. I got the information from a magazine and not from some trashy one for your information. But obviously your the expert so the rest of us should just shut up it seems.

Correct, especially the kind of people telling someone that rowing is a poor leg exercise!

No harm in putting it politely

exactly, while it is possible to lose wieght overall, it is impossible to pick where from, and specific exercises don't help lose fat, they only build muscle, so the result possibly is that area will be even bulkier.

So are squats good for that or not? As I do a lot of them....in the hope they'll reduce my thighs!

Well today i bought two of the new Boots - Shapers pieces of exercise equipment. One was a tummy/waist toning disc thing and the other was a thigh/leg/bum toner, and it says that it 'trims and tones' your thighs. Was hoping they would be quite effective but not so sure anymore! They weren't expensive so you could give them a go if you wanted to

Yeah, try all types of exercises until you find what works best for you. But more importantly, concentrate on dropping your body fat percentage.

Generally I find people working in the gym know **** all, but this guy seems to be ok.

You cannot target where to lose fat from, it is lost gradually from everywhere. Bear in mind the fat goes into your blood, not directly into your muscles.

Rowing is probably one of the most challenging exercises for legs. As a rower, if by the end of a race I can still feel my legs, I haven't tried hard enough. However I can normally still feel my arms.

Really you just need to put some work in the gym, it doesn't matter what you do. Your metabolism should increase, and that'll help things out; you don't just lose the calories you burn off in the gym. And you'll get a little more toned.

you can't spot reduce fat, but if you have lots of fat on a certain area, it's likely that your body will cut into this first. For example, i lose crap loads off my tummy whenever i lose any weight, it gets beyond flat, even when i think there's nothing left on my tummy to lose it keeps getting smaller before the rest of my body does a thing! you don't lose the exact same amount all over your body - that's why people have different body shapes. it is likely you will retain the same 'pear' shape, but you can definitely reduce the size of your thighs.

i don't know wtf some of these boys are on about but it IS very important as a girl that you do not overuse any weighted leg machines. Even my gym instructor told me that it is very easy for girls to build thigh muscle which has the effect of bulking (as well as toning) so be careful. but rowing is good exercise as it's mainly cardio but also has subtle toning effects without the bulking that weights can have.
