Does anyone know what happens if....?

Hi everyone. So i'm planning on going to college soon.(It doesn't matter what grade (Well apart from a U I get because there are different levels for different grades)
But i'm wondering for example if I get a F in English Lit GCSE and a D in English language GCSE does it become like an overall grade say an E or what happens and
Does the same apply for if I get a F in Maths applications but a E in maths methods.
Or what do colleges do?
For maths, only the highest grade counts. For English...it depends...but in order to do a levels at most colleges you need five GCSEs above a c incl English and maths.
