Wash hands often ;yes;

Partly on (possibly) less hygienic conditions than home (though you can deal with that fairly easily yourself). A lot to do with meeting lots of new people, with lots of new strains of viruses to give to you.

Surprisingly, the only year I haven't got ill has been this one, when I've been spending all my days in hospitals.

Thank God not much this time around.

The last time I got ill was when I went on my work experience to a nursery and had all these toddlers sneezing on me and holding my hand with their snotty palms. I got the flu and had to have the last day off.

Before that it must have been a year? I am quite a healthy person. I haven't vomited for more than 8 years.

I've been feeling exhausted a lot recently because of stress. Haven't had the flu or that bad a cold though cos I take echinacea.

Reply 6

I haven't had a cold/flu related illness for years.

I get tired quite alot though, but that's because I either don't get enough sleep or sleep too much!

last time i got one was in year 9

I don't get ill often, but when I do get ill it tends to be of the "hard and fast" variety. I'll be completely non-functional for 2 or 3 days, then wake up one morning and be fine again.
I had maybe 3 colds last year.

I get them really really badly when I get them though - shivering, fever, aching joints, splitting headache -the works.
It's almost more like having flu than a cold (except with a lot of sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, streaming eyes).

OP - how's your diet?

Reply 12

I get quite a few colds, ill get over one and fell ok for a while and then come down with another - i seem to have an awful immune system.

It cant be down to my diet though, i eat lots of and a large variety of fruit and vegetables.

im on my second on this year. its still jan :hmpf: stupid nursing

between me in school and my bf in the hospital we get a fair few bugs between us - but only one so far this academic year to take us properly off work and in bed

at uni I never got anything too serious (to keep me in bed) until three weeks before my finals and then I got a vicious strain of gastro for 16 days (yes, it was ****ing awful) and we narrowed it down to because the freezer in our house was on the blink and I must have eaten something that had been frozen/thawed/frozen/thawed. So beware of that!

Otherwise, washing your hands thoroughly with soap is one of the best ways to stop the spread of stuff. And try and keep your hands away from your mouth. Oh, and try not to touch other people's hands either - I never touch people's hands if I've got a bug myself but some people aren't so considerate.

Been drinking a lot at uni? Alcohol and lack of sleep is one sure way to kill the immune system - coupled together with the typical student diet of pizzas, kebabs and no fresh produce.

Reply 16

im trying to rectify the fresh produce thing and i had a heavy weekend last week so thats why i feel so bad atm

Every year without fail, around mid December, BAM. Bronchitis. I absolutely dread it but I can't remember a bronchitis-free Christmas since I was a little girl :frown:. Something to do with my having whooping cough as a baby or something but apart from that, I never get poorly. Lucky me

I've been ill (I'm considering ill to be when I've had to have time off school) 3 or 4 times within the last 8 or so months =/

Last May I had a throat & ear infection, October I had a severe cold, November I had a sore throat and lost my voice for a while, and I've just finished getting over the flu now.

Not very often at all...with colds the best thing I find to do is as soon as you notice any symptoms of them coming on, literally down about a litre of orange juice and then drink loads of water...keep really hydrated and eat loads of fruit and I feel fine after that. That's how I avoided fresher's flu- 1L of Tropicana a day, a multivitamin, lots of fruit.

I have a cold now but it's due to a few too many late nights...so make sure you're getting enough sleep as well.
