Why is time a controlled variable?

Ok I know this is quite obvious but I just don't know how to explain it.

This is in an experiment which measures the speed of woodlice in 30 seconds.

For your practical it's not too much of a factor and I'm not sure if it's even relevant. If you're heating them up then it's be because they'll adapt to the temperature or they will cool them.
