On tuesday the 6th february i'm getting my braces off....and although i'm excited, i'm so scared =( Bit of a wimp when it comes to dentists/orthodontists! How do they take them off my teeth? do they just yank them off?!?! =(

They don't exactly 'yank' them off - they 'break' them off but you won't exactly feel anything painful. It'll feel weird and uncomfortable though. But just think of the nice pretty straight teeth you'll have now

Ooh yay!

It feels fine, they fiddle in your mouth a while (a little like they are tightening it, doesn't hurt) and take all the wires out, then they buff off the glue with a little machine. Like a scale and polish. It isn't that comfortable, you can feel a little vibration on your teeth, which is a bit weird, but it doesn't hurt or anything. Then they will probably take some photos, where they stick this plastic thing in your mouth to keep your lips back and take a few photos. Then you are free to go.

I couldn't stop licking my teeth! I kept smiling like a loon for the rest of the day as well. It felt great afterwards. Straight teeth

You might have to wear a retainer for a while though. Which I hated more than the fixed brace. But I hardly wore mine (BAD me!!!)

I was told to go to the dentist and have my teeth cleaned after because they can leave some cement on your teeth :frown: Glad I did, felt wear running my tongue over my teeth and still feeling gritty.

nothing scary trust me

if i rember correctly all they do in the end is just get some sort of clippers and cut the wire and then take of the pads..dont rember fully but trust me..youll be fine.

and i also spent quite some time licking my teeth afterwards..was quite weird and nice not to have metal on them anymore.

My orthodontist did all that in the appointment :s-smilie:
i hate my retainer more than my braces too and the fact ive been wearing my retainer none stop for a year.
well meant to anyway, i only wear it at night or when i come home from college, surely a year is far too long for a retainer and it doesnt look like they'll even say "just go to nights" anytime soon.

having my braces off was easy compared to having my jaw broken by surgeons. and you'll love your teeth after!

I don't think my orthodontist was that good.

Mine was lovely  I almost miss him...

He was always up for a chat about music, he knew what gigs I had lined up to go to and asked how they were, "So, did Jimmy Eat World play the Authority Song last week?" He was a star.

I can't wait to have mine off- at least a year to go though, argh!
I hated having a brace they cut your tongue! You know the metal ring they put round your back teeth? When mine came off it had all horrible crud on my teeth! yack. I couldn't stop moving my lips and tongue over my nice smooth teeth

Don't worry about getting ur braces off. I was (and still am) the biggest wimp with dentist/orthodontist stuff and i was sooo terrified about getting my brace off but it wasn't even as bad as having it tightened. Even the back ones around my molars...i thought they'd yank my teeth out with them but they came off surprisingly easily.
It's the nicest thing to have them off too. Good luck =)
The day i had my braces off was SUCH a good day....My Teeth, from my perspective were not that bad...i was like..hmmm a bit crooked but so what, but then dentist said id have to have braces cos there was all sorts of crap happing in my gums...
In the end i had to have 4 teeth removed to make way for teeth coming through from the gums...I then had braces put on for 3 years....then when 1 of the teeth wouldnt come down..i had to have surgery and gum was opened up (under local aneastetic) and a gold chain was placed on tooth, and was dragged down by the action of the braces...

And like everyone else on this thread i licked my teeth for ages lol...so weird to have my teeth normal after 3 years....
As for retainer lol, stopped wearing that ages ago...more bother than nessesary really

And taking them off dont hurt at all really...Its better than those horrible visits to get them tightened up *shivers at memory*
How long have you guys have your braces on for ?

Ive had mine on for 18 months so far, have them tightened once a month, cant chew for at least 3 days after that :frown:
Just over 3 yearsssssssssss Off tho a while ago lol

Marc
it felt so WEIRD afterwards. My teeth felt so *smooth*. Very bizarre. I got used to it after about 24 hours ish... And then I couldn't stop smiling at every mirror I walked past!!
lol ditto....i kept on smiling at the mirror...and also i was driven home by my mum and i really wanted to see my teeth but i felt like i was being really vain by looking at myself in the car mirror, so i resisted, then went home and just stared at mirror lol grinning

I've had exactly the same thing happen to me, except I got that operation done twice cos the first time it didn't work, luckily both times under general rather than local anesthetic.

I still have mine on though, it will be three years in April:frown:
