I think im mentally handicapped

Im not joking because Ive looked it up and it says for mild:

Mildly affected individuals make up the majority of the people who are mentally handicapped. They often cannot be distinguished from people of average intelligence in a social setting. They learn more slowly, and have difficulties with language, memory, and perception. As adults, they can lead fairly normal lives, working and living independently.

The thing that got me worried is that other people tend to think there is something wrong with me, like in football most of my team think Im strange because I don't like taking my jumper off (I hate showing my arms Im not as stocky as the others so feel stupid) they once asked why and I said I feel more secure and they looked at me weird and said 'what do you mean'. Also I have been in football for 9 years and still have very basic skills. Im just embarrased all the time and quiet. Other people say I talk really quiet and am reserved. Im also really small for my age and look 14 when im 19. I didn't start speaking proper until I was 2 years old but it turned out I was just stubborn:confused: I have always been in the middle classes for academic ability in subjets (there was low, medium and higher) and for GCSE's I got B's for English and science, C for maths and D's for everything else, AS levels E, D and C. I really did try my best though and most people who got what I got said they didn't do anything.

I know this is a v boring thread so thanks if you have got this far lol! Just what do you think?

Sounds normal to me. Who cares if you are 'mentally handicapped' anyway. Its just a label. It doesn't affect you in any way other than being a name.

um sorry to say, but not taking your jumper off because your arms don;t look good and getting b grades does not imply that you are mentally handicapped.

Maybe dyslexic?

I don't think you are mentally handicapped at all, what exact for of being mentally handicapped do you mean, there are so many different conditions out there. Just the jumper thing doesn't make you handicapped, it makes you a bit insecure about your arms, and being small for your age is definitely not a sign of being mentally handicapped.

I think you're insecure about yourself, if you think this, and are quiet and reerved and are comparing your arms with others and thinking you are worse. I think you have a pessimistic view of your own abilities - who says you only have basic football skills? And Bs Cs and Ds are still respectable results, especially if the Bs and C were in the core subjects.

You aren't mentally handicapped. Focus on your good points - yes, you do have some

You write far too coherently to be mentally handicapped.

I don't think that you're mentally handicapped from what you have just said.:s:

You've said it yourself. There's a whole big group of people who are worse than you.

Yea though from what Ive read it says people who have it mild can hardly be noticed with others of average intelligence. Anyway I guess it doesn't matter I just wanted to know, maybe its something else like lack of social skills or just strangeness lol, im probably just a geek and a bit slow (unintelligent one if they exist).
Thanks for the opinions.

Hey, don't beat yourself up - everyone has hang ups about certain body parts or appearance issues and as for the being slow thing, I can be so ditzy and thick sometimes, but it doesn't mean we're handicapped! As for grades, you might know your stuff really well but not have great exam technique, believe me, I know bugger all about my subjects, but learning how to 'do' an exam is how I've coped!

Have some chocolate, cheer up!

I don't know. I have no experience of it, so can't say whether or not I'd like it.

Go to the doctor to get a proper diagnosis.

Just to let you know, I once posted a thread of the same nature an Yahoo Answers. I was in a state of intensive doubt about my abilities and truly believed I had mental problems. I thought the SAT lied and my grades were given to me because my teachers felt sorry for me. Turns out my thinking was 100% false. You are not alone in thinking about this and questioning yourself, but I promise you, you aren't mentally handicapped- believe me.

You're not mentally handicapped at all. You just sound like you lack confidence in yourself, which is a perfectly normal thing. I don't agree with that definition you found (not your fault of course...just whoever wrote it). In that definition you could probably label half the population! Which is unfair and pointless. To me, a mentally handicapped person is one whose intellectual disabilities seriously affect their everyday lives. Someone like my aunt who is entirely dependent on my gran for support and care. Hardly someone who'd be able to "work and live independently".

Frankly I don't find anything "abnormal" about you. You're smaller, you have a hang-up about your build, you're reserved and shy, you're not brilliant at football though you do try and that's admirable. These have nothing to do with your mental capacities. So you worked hard and got CDE? Not everyone gets A grades (75% of the population don't). Many of the most intelligent people I know - people who I can have a proper in depth conversation with, people who have an ounce of commonsense and who think about things - never examined well and ended up with low grades, even dropping out before A levels.

So don't put yourself down. There's nothing wrong with you - all you need is a bit more confidence in yourself.
