Unemployed

Im unemployed and am constantly critcised by parents, relatives I can understand where they are comming from. Like today one of my relatives came in and said 'its alright getting up when you want and thinking 'oh I'l eat what I want'. Last week everyone of them said that if they were to be my age again they would never like to be me so why are they making out like I have a nice life? I had anxiety a while ago but don't want to use it as an excuse now, I did before. So why are unemployed people called? Ive done voluntary work etc.

From the sound of it, they're attempting to coerce you into getting a job. And I don't understand the other half of what you said...:s-smilie:

Seriously though, a part time job is a great way to earn a little cash so you can treat yourself and go out with your mates, a chance to meet new people and helps a whole lot when applying for summer jobs or real jobs in the future if you can grab 6 months experience somewhere....

Plus it forces you to interact with people if you're a bit naturally shy - you can build up communication skills behind the facade of serving the customer.
If you're at college, then surely you're not unemployed? I mean I'm at Uni... I don't have a job... and I only have classes 3 days a week. As I spend a great deal of time doing precisely "balls all" it could be argued that I am unemployed. But no! I am a student. such a glorious word.

If you're at college you aren't 'unemployed', you're a student! I didn't have a job at college and don't have one at uni now. It's not a problem unless you want a bit of extra spending money for yourself or your parents desperately need the cash.

well im constantly getting put down for it! My mum said she was going to start going out on her bike again for exersise and I said jokingly 'like last year' as she never went and then everyone started saying about how I do what I want to when I like to. Its as though they are jelous but then they wouldn't want to be me so..

Ive had a few jobs Ive just not got one now, I did get one a few months ago but on my first day I thought I was having a heart attack so didn't go and lost the job my whole family think im crazy but really Id rather have a physical illness at least that would be proof of my incapabilities.

My dad sometimes has a go at me about getting a part-time job, but as I don't live at home it's not much of a problem. And he doesn't go on about it, because he knows I'll just get pissed off (nothing in this world annoys me like being told what to do, in any form). I also know what you mean about the "jealousy" thing - for example a friend of mine who dropped out of Uni last summer and now works full time is constantly going on about how easy I have it as a student, and how I'm a lazy git for not working every spare hour I have, and he moans constantly about never getting any time off - but then insists he'd never want to be a student again. To be honest I know for a fact he wishes he could still be a lazy student and have every weekend off, he's even practically admitted it with a few drinks in him. Basically what I say is - you're going to spend your whole LIFE working once you finish being a student, so there's no shame in avoiding it as long as you can... so long as you have a place to live and the means to feed yourself and a bit left over for having a damn good time.

Was there some medical explanation for that? Or... perhaps you had a panic attack?

True, I feel better now thanks, though my family always mention that at my age they were working in factories etc (making it sound as bad as possible) yet they think its only fair that I work like they did.. why do they want me to have it as bad as them? They can't lol so it must be jelousy. I do still live at my parents though.

Panic attack but it sooo seemed like an excuse, it didn't seem like it was linked to the job though its a quincidence if it wasn't. I was fine with other jobs.

Ha ha, sounds like the way my parents used to go on about getting "a tin can and some string" for christmas . As my dad's brother put it: "They're talking pish, they got plenty".

I have no idea why my dad wants me to have a job, it seems to be on principle more than for money. He does pay my rent, but he would still pay it if I had a part time job. I pay for everything else (bills, food, clothes, uni stuff, going out etc.) myself from my loan (topped up by the good ol' fruit machines)... so I don't see why it matters to him how much spare money I have. He just seems to have a "people should work constantly" mentality that I personally don't agree with. There's more to life.
people dont understand how depressing and worthless not doing anything worthwhile is for a long period of time.

like people think ive got a great life having 6hours one week, 12hours the other contact time at university. When its incredibly boring, hours are spent with nothing to do. So you get into a cycle of sleeping in late and generally being a layabout.

and toy solider, my parents go on about me having a job all the time too, and i dont 'get' it either. I have a job in my uni holidays, and dont particularly need the money during term time..so i fail to see why i need to be working every single day of a year (what they seem to want me to do!)

It's an odd mentality that some people seem to have, that paid work = self worth. It's like the strange respect that comes along with phrases like "he worked hard every day of his life" in referrence to old / dead people. My general response is "he's still pretty much dead though, isn't he?". A non-vocal response obviously.

very true! like the people who get praised for being a cleaner at the same place for 20years and have never had a day off. I think "how can people be that unambitious!" they could have ventured out and be daring...like be a cleaner at a different place:rolleyes:

True. No one actually checks the referrences. You could even invent places that don't exist! Make up a phone number (check to make sure it's not a real one) and stick it on the CV. Yes some places might check it, but plenty won't bother, so just hand in a CV to loads of places and play the odds

I made quite a lot of money out of babysitting when I was doing A-levels. I found it quite rewarding.

If you are at college then that is your job.

I've suffered from acute anxiety in the past and I know how debilitating it can be. Maybe you can show your family some websites/books etc that deal with this topic - it might make them a little more compassionate.

If you're at college until your late teens and Uni until your early 20's and never have a job in that time, will it affect your chances of getting a job in the future?

Can CV's be sent in the post, or do you have to go to every shop in person and hand your CV in?
