Slicing your fingertip off? (graphic - don't look if you are quaesy!!)

** WARNING - may cause quaesiness and general uneasiness!! **

Today I managed to slice my fiingertip off. Was just casually making bacon-cheese sandwiches and accidentally removed the tip of my thumb with a cheese grater. A rather large bit as well and about 5mm of nail was involved. Been to the A&E for a quite few hours today, having x-rays done and having it cleaned and all that jazz (betadine -OUCH) and now I have a massive and a rather comical looking bandage on it.

Was just wondering, has that happened to other people here? How did you manage to do it and how did it heal? Did it grow back or did it leave a big scar?

On a more serious note... When should you change the bandages? I have an appointment in 3 days to see how it looks like, but it has been bleeding quite alot (as it would do) and a little bit of the blood has sipped through the bandage they put on it today on top of the dressing they put around it. I can also see the bandage looking quite red underneath the dressings. Didn't really wanna go back to A&E on a Saturday night (strange people, not the safest area and a long wait) but do you reckon I should go there tomorrow to change it, as my GP is not available on Sundays?

Will call NHSdirect tomorrow, for now was just interested if people here had any experience of their own about these things.
sliced it off in what way? just a flesh wound really or a properly disfigured fingertip?

I once did this when I was working as a chef ... got distracted whilst slicing apples with a mandolin and the inevitable happened. Fortunately it wasn't a massive piece of finger but it bled like anything. I sort of stuck it back on and plastered it up, put a glove on and carried on work. It healed perfectly although there's a slight 'indentation' on the tip of the finger where it happened. It hasn't scarred though.

As for changing the plaster ... probably best to ring the NHS helpline as scarlet ibis suggested

I did it when cutting lettuce, only the top 2mm and I didn't bother with A&E, made my own comical bandage. Went back to normal though.. But yours is quite a bit of finger and I imagine it might end up looking a bit stubby..
where do you buy your cheese graters from??? i want one! i've cut myself numerous times on my cheesegrater but never with such extreme effects! You must have a truely superb grater.

Was there a picture that was removed - i just got all excited there for a minute.

Once i was in the hospital and some kid came in and took the top of his finger off using an electric sander at school. The point of the story...i don't know.

umm, i think the former part was pretty serious, is that the funny part?

Ouch. The worst injury my thumb's had was when I was 7; I was playing with a swiss army knife (yes, yes, I know) when it snapped shut, cutting down to the bone. That really hurt, but healed surprisingly quickly. I've been very careful with sharp things ever since!

I'm surprised they didn't tell you when to change the bandages. Can't help there, but if it starts bleeding, raise your arm above your head to reduce blood flow to your hand. Try and keep it relaxed and in one position, which will help it heal slightly faster.

My mum cut her fingertip off with a knife before. It sounded as painful as a man who just lost his penis.

Are you comparing a cutting a fingertip off to a penis?

I'm comparing the amount of shock, pain, and horror of losing a fingertip. Judging by my mum's scream, panic, and sobbing, it did look painful. There was so much blood and she wanted to call the ambulance and make a scene out of her finger. She was slicing cabbage with a kitchen knife...

I'm guessing you may be female :p: Trust me....if it happened to a penis there'd be a hell of a lot more blood than if you cut every finger tip off on both hands.
First hand experience!! I cut the top of my left hand ring finger off with a pair of scissors when I was about 11. It's the "pad" of my finger. It bled for ages and I ended up going to casualty as well :s-smilie: not the best experience of my life.
I'm 19 now (nearly 20) and I have a big white scar on my finger. It has mutated my finger print and shows no signs of disappearing! It's not hugely noticeable or anything tho. LGR
Don't change your own bandages. If there's blood coming through then put another dressing on top. As soon as you can go to a GP or a nurse clinic and get them to change it.

I'm sorry, I just can't help myself sometimes...

King Arthur: [after Arthur's cut off both of the Black Knight's arms] Look, you stupid Bastard. You've got no arms left.
Black Knight: Yes I have.
King Arthur: *Look*!
Black Knight: It's just a flesh wound.

Thank you for help and suggestions. Been to see the nurse today and will see them again in a few days.

Well, there was not any bone involved if that is what you are asking. But yeah, it is in a dorsal angle and about 1/3 of the nail is gone so I´d say it is properly disfigured :frown:

Edit: Love the Monty Python quote, great film.
I did that once! I sliced quite a bit but the nail was fine (only if I was to commit a crime and have my fingerprints taken, it woundn't be possible :p:) I was lucky because the knife (was making a salad) didn't slice it off completely, and a 1 cm bit of my thumb's "pad" was hanging on a bit of skin. After a few days it reconnected with the rest of my thumb and you can't even notice it now except that fingertip feels harder when I touch it.

Gool luck!

My son took the top of his finger off at school when he was closing a gate, he was only four at the time, there was blood everywhere, ended up at A and E, where they said it couldnt be saved , next day he was in the childrens hospital having reconstructive surgery to his finger. The nail on it grows over his finger, we have been told he may need more surgery as he gets older..........wasnt all bad though , we sued the school for negligence and won, My son was awarded 4 and a half grand, which went in to a savings account and will mature when hes 18.
