is balliol a rich college?
do we have any book grant ?
can we find the book we need for course normally?
Is the food in hall cheap?

1. Eh, we're not a poor one, but we don't stand out as a rich one either.
2. Nope because...
3...that's what the library is for
4. Relatively. If you get a hall card, it averages out to about £2 per meal, I believe.

how central is the college within oxford?
Thanks

We're taking about 100-110 undergrads per year I think. The college is just about as central as you can get. No more than a one minute walk to Sainsburys.

i applied for an open day on the 19th, but have had no response yet, is that usual :s-smilie:?

It depends, when did you send the form?
Reply 107
can't exactly remember, just under a week ago perhaps. It was done through the online application form, rather than by post, if that makes a difference

I heard there are three bands of accommodation at Balliol - is there really that much of a difference between the rooms? Could someone describe what each "type" is like?
Reply 109

I imagine you'll hear something early this week. I do have a vague idea of when the subject talks will be, so ask if you have any questions.

There's no real animosity any more - historically there was (and for rather good reasons), but now it's just a bit of a joke.

Back in the 1890s, Balliol was one of the few colleges to take on what were then called 'black' undergraduates (in truth, the majority were from India). Trinity was very proud of its all-white student body, and took to chanting 'Balliol, Balliol, bring out your black men' etc, as well as other equally witty racist epithets.

It was, however, noticed by a certain contingent at Balliol that Trinity had, in fact, taken on a certain Arthur Mario Agricola Collier Galetti-di-Cadilhac - apparently a rather swarthy Italian guy, nicknamed by some Balliolites as 'Gordouli' - after a popular brand of Egyptian cigarettes, it seems...

A song began, and continues to this day - 'The Gordouli'. A light-hearted joke at Trinity's hypocritical racism.

Hello,

I'm applying for Balliol this year to study Law and French. Decision made solely on how friendly everyone was at the Open Day in June!

Anyway, a couple of questions:

1) Is Balliol known to be a LGBT friendly college? Now, I know that no colleges are likely to be overtly homophobic and the JCR site seems to indicate an active LGBT society. However, I'd just like to check!

2) Is anyone on TSR currently studying Law with LSE, the French option? I met a 2nd year at the Open Day called Caro...or something like that. Can't remember :frown:

THanks in advance for all your help!

Glad to hear you enjoyed our open day! Balliol is indeed LGBT friendly - there's normally an event or two each term run by the LGBT officer, as well as the annual LGBT bop.
I don't know about anyone on TSR doing law with LSE - but I know Caro, who's on her year in France this year.

I just realised that you can't live in the college in 2nd year, are the prices similar at Jowett walk, to the rooms in college, and do you have to pay for a 12 month rent, or just pay for the time you spend, ie term time.

Also if you do choose to move out in 2nd year, how much money can you get? Im not well off, or poor, more of the middle bracket, so will i be having to dish out significantly more?

Also btw Ghosh, i got a confirmation of the open day.

Room prices at Jowett are more expensive than most of the Freshers' rooms in college - about £1200 per term (but about the same price as college rooms third years generally choose). You pay for just the time you are actually occupying the room (ie: 3 x 9weeks), but you do have to move your stuff out over the holidays  (like most college rooms). I think the flats and rooms at Jowett are much nicer than the ones in college though!

How much money can you get from where? I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you get any from college. Also not too sure about how much people living out pay each month, but the contract will (almost) definitely be for a full 12 month period.
