Ok you chemists out there - here's your chance to shine!!! :biggrin:

My friend asked me to name the following compunds and I have NO idea what they are called, so please help!!! :smile:

C6H5CH2Cl

C6H5MgBr

C6H5OHBr3

I am really sorry - can't find how to change numbers to subscipt

Thanks!!! :smile:

They could be called loads of different things, depends where the Bromies/Magnesium atoms and CH2CL group is...

Well attached to one of the carbon atoms - thats how you usually write formulas

Well the first one is probably 1-chloromethylbenzene
The second i have no idea.
The sixth is tribromophenol (though unsure about the positioning of the bromine atoms, prolly 2,4,6)

This person is in the same class as me and i don't really know how to name aromatic compuds apart from the basic. Do yuo think we need to able to name aromatic chemistry for A2 edexcel chemistry?

You most certainly will. And you should read through your textbook, because it really is quite simple, it's all very logical.

obviously no one has been bothered to start one, too much effort ect.
there are quite a few threads tho devoted to just chem

Hey sally! I sent an email reply to Soz but i think i 4got to send it to you!!! oops! here are the names (altho i guessed at the 2nd one, but the others r def correct):

C6H5CH2Cl = (chloromethyl) benzene

C6H5MgBr = phenyl magnesium bromide

C6H5OHBr3 = 2,4,6-tribromophenol
