I'll echo what Liana said - you don't need anything. I only had Moore and Daley's Clinically Oriented Anatomy, Netters' Atlas of Anatomy and the infamous VVP for MIMS. All my books for everything else I got from the library, and to be honest I wouldn't have needed the ones I did have if I was more keen about going to the library and getting things. Definitely don't buy anything till you come up; there will almost certainly be second-hand ones available from upper years, and places like Borders, Heffers etc will have discounts in the first few weeks.

Check out Boron and Boulpaep for physiology too- it's very methodical and has a lot of wonderful diagrams. I really didn't get on well with Guyton and Hall...

... only really look at the scores on the first 2 sections.

To be honest, I personally think that the BMAT is the load of garbage and will give no accurate prediction over how well you will perform both during the medical course or indeed as a practicing doctor...

you're correct about the first two sections being the ones they use but according to this study BMAT performance is also a valid predictor of odds of getting a first during one's medical course(despite your anecdotal evidence individuals will always buck the trend) but how good a practising doctor you'll be who knows? for starters the BMAT hasn't been around long enough for its first cohorts to finish their courses!!

Thanks for the information on books everyone; next set of questions now... :p:

In the third year you can do anything from a wide range of triposes I am led to believe. Yet I have heard from people that although the medical department will allow you to study another tripos, it is almost impossible to let the other department allow you to do the course. Also, say you can do other courses, which part of the other course do you do? For example, part IA History, or part II etc? And what then, would your degree title be? Leading on from this; is it much harder to get accepted onto the Cambridge Clinical course having not done a science related third year? Will they look upon you less favourably? Also, say you did Law in your third year for example, would your degree be worthy of anything if you wanted to pursue a law related path, or is there just too little content? How hard is it to get accepted on another tripos, if at all?!

Thanks.

I know someone who did Music in their third year, and is on the Cambridge clinical course. I don't think it's exactly common, but evidently it is possible.

Generally, if you're doing a non-science 3rd year, you will do Part IA of that particular tripos. I know of people who've done Maths, History, Theology, Geography...some of whom got into Addies and some didn't. It certainly used to be the case they you couldn't apply to Cambridge without a scientific Part II, but with the introduction of the new clinical course that has changed. I'm not sure how easy/hard it is to get onto other Triposes, it probably depends on your A-levels, how popular the subject already is, etc.

If you did Law, you would almost certainly do IA, and that wouldn't be worth anything on its own for a legal career. I believe it is somehow possible to do an extra year or two in the Law dept and come out with both medical and law degrees, but I only know one person who's done that.

Thanks for the information Helenia. By the way, I was only using Law as an example; I realise that if I wanted to do Law I should have applied for that. :p: Out of interest, how hard or out of the norm would it be to stay on for extra years as you said?

Does anyone else have any information?

For my year (two years ago): Anatomy gave out the whole year's lecture notes at the start, while Biochem and Physiology would give out the lecture notes for the lecture series at the start of each lecture series outside the lecture theatres. The notes were also available online, either on the department webpages (Anatomy) or CamTools (Biochem and Physiology).
Hi!

Any suggestions on the teaching of the Cambridge Medical course. I would greatly appreiciate any comments that relate specifically to medical applications to Cambridge.

Also, valid reasons for choosing Cambridge for medicine over other universities? Comments please!

Thanks,

The way you are talking it suggests you havent applied yet...

The deadline was yesterday.
I have applied ...I'm filling in the SAQ
Isn't it supposed to be personal reasons why you chose it over another university?

Jessaay!

I don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of brain-storming with other people.
Yes but i'm just wondering trying to find out more about the University so that I can form a personal reason.

No but when you directly ask it can end up with just copying down the answers. Don't mind giving a bit of direction, saying "did you like something about the college you've applied to" etc but just taking answers to me is over the top a little.

Did you visit? Did you find something about the college you applied to appealing (i.e. history, architecture...), did you find something about the traditional course structure appealing, did you like the idea of the integrated year thing, did you find a lecture from someone there interesting?

Any of those I think would be valid reasons which I'd put. I'm no longer applying there but that's all I can really think of.

Hi just a question about medicine applicants, it says in this book im reading that if ur thinking of applying for medicine and vet medicine that you shouldnt apply to all vet schools and that you should leave two choices to uni's of a different choice. Is that right? And that the medical universities dont see your other uni choices. Is this true?

But what if say ur applying for vet med at cambridge and also as a back up apply for natsci at cambridge too? Surely cambridge would see ur being less commited?

What are u suppose to do?
Could you please help me by informing me what is on the reccomended reading list for Psychiatry at this website https://erweb.medschl.cam.ac.uk/?4617 it requires login credentials which as a potential Cambridge student I do not have. Epidemiology would also be helpful. Obviously rep to anyone who helps me and quite possibly a whole crate of glen fiddich if I get in.
