Journalism Work Experience

I'm getting really frustrated.

I have always wanted to be a journalist and in my time I've racked up some pretty impressive places. So part of my second year is to get three weeks of work experience and I am at the end of my tether.

I've never had so much trouble getting a place before, I thought it was supposed to get easier but apparently not so. And it's not even nice now, I used to get at least some sort of acknowledgement they'd received my stuff and a nice apology but now I'm getting nowt.

I've applied to everything newspapers, magazines, supplements, internet, radio, TV, called in favours and yet NOTHING.

I'm getting really stressed out. Can anybody help me, vis a vis, I scratch your back you scratch mine.

It's hilarious considering in the last month I've had more stuff published than I have in all my time put together.

*shrugs*

I know supposed to be persistent but I've been looking since October and yet nothing.

im also looking at the moment.. im currently doing a levels and im getting no where finding any.

i wanna do this journalism course at uni in 2009.. i've always been interested, tried to get journalism work experience in year 10 but was unsuccessful.

i know just how important it is to have it and this summer is just the perfect time for it...

all i can recommend for you, is the BBC... cos u gotta be over 18 for most of their work experience placements... might be the obvious choice an no doubt you have tried?? but sometimes the obvious is not always as obvious as it may seem.

so yeah.. just wanted to share that with you, seemed an interesting post to reply to LOL and sorry i cudnt be of much help. xx

this is how i started working for a newspaper: I went to the head editors office, knocked on his door and asked for work experience. he referred me to the secretaries of course, but he knew my name and face at least. i ended up getting the place and what you have to do is just be insistant and tag along. Be the annoying tag along, just ask, can I come along when you do this and that, even after your work experience is over. Once you've had work experience somewhere, don't just break off contact, visit the office, see if you can help out and tag along. Eventually I got offered to write free lance for the youth page and from there many youth page authors go offered to write free lance for other pages too after finishing school - but i went off to uni far far away, hehe.
It's all about not taking your foot out of the door ever, once you've wedge it in there. Go back and visit your old work experience places and just annoy them until they give you a job basically. And that's not just my experience, I know an ex-editor of the Guardian and she said, you just have to be the annoying tag along after work experience and stick around to get a job as a freelance writer (best work experience as it's a very flexible part time job really) and again, once in there you can always ask people and pursade them to let you have work experience at their section (i.e. with the sports editors if that's your fancy). just get in with one paper and try to work your way into the system. the more they see you around in the offices and get to think of you as an emoployee since you're always there, the more likely they are to say "yes" to anything in terms of work experience.

I emailed Piers Morgan in year 10 and told him I was coming to work for him in the summer. So he gave me a date... then he got fired. But I went and got my nude Big Brother front page anyway.

This has no relevance to the thread, just wanted to brag. In truth it wasn't that great.

try WOMAN magazine - I did work experience for them in year 11 and they seriously considered all letters they got sent asking for work exp... well it might have changed in that 2 years but its worth a try if you havent already.
try local papers, their so desperate for stories they'd probably write one about your work experience placement application, hell you could even write one on it :p:

Haha, thanks guys for all your wonderful advice. I actually ended up at the National Union of Journalists magazine where I had a wicked time. I got a front cover, was paid for about fifteen stories that were printed, met some of the most influential journalists I know and Tony Benn. It was brilliant.

I'm a few months off from graduating now and now my full-time teaching is finished I'm actually starting work on Monday as a contractor for the BBC. It's a sub-editing, online thing which isn't quite writing as of yet, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

So anybody reading this panicking about journalism and work experience etc... don't worry because even the most useless of people (ie. me) can actually pull their finger out and do something about it.
