Eating until sick

Some days I get home and I have my dinner, and then I just continue to eat and eat. I continue this despite feeling full, and then when I start to feel sick I stop. Then I go and either be sick (because I ate too much), or I make myself sick.

I know that I shouldn't, but once I have one nice thing I just can't stop. I don't really know why. Am I just greedy? :frown:

I dont think you are greedy, but it does seem to me like you could be on the verge of developing an eating disorder.........not an expert though I am just going on what you have said in your post. Apart from feeling sick after eating all that food, how else do you feel????, do you feel satisfied or disgusted with yourself???. As I said , I"m no expert , but warning bells have started ringing when reading your post.

I'd see a doctor if I were you; there might be an underlying cause to this.

Sorry I can't help any more than that!

Its not unusual. to a certain extent it is just greed-the desire to eat without concequence.
I love food, live to eat rather than eat to live, but I try and keep the self dicipline not to binge, and to look at me (I am very thin) you wouldnt imagine I was so greedy.

Just eat slower, when you reach fullness, stop, go and brush your teeth and do not eat anything else.
also eat food which is good for you. Lots of fruit etc. Not only is it good for you, but also low cal and filling compared to processed calorific unhealthy food.

Wow. Don't surround yourself with nice food. Or if you can't help it, eat something healthy instead.

Im not sure the eat slower thing works :frown:

I always had it instilled into me as a child that you must always clear your plate and count yourself lucky you arnt living in a 3rd world country.
Consequently, I always feel guilty when I see good food going to waste.
The answer I suppose is to make less food?

If you are making yourself sick, then it sounds like you have an eating disorder (bulimia). also, eating until you are sick is an eating disorder as well (compulsive over eating), which is so much more than simply being greedy. there are probably underlying causes to this, which you really need to address. go and talk to someone, your best friend, your mum, a doctor. being sick a lot, over a period of time is really awful for you. it eventually corodes away your teeth, your hair starts to fall, you nails will be brittle and your skin will be dull, and eventually your body will struggle to keep any food down.
To try and stop yourself binging, keep only food for meals in the house, and have fruit for snack food, although i understand this isnt easy when you still live with parents. try and keep yourself occupied with uni/college work. i know this doesnt address the underlying problem, but by keeping your mind of food and by not having rubbishy food in the house, you are diverting attention away from eating, but i know this can be difficult.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Annie72 - I always feel disgusted with myself that I allowed myself to eat that much. I don't know if what I feel makes a difference though.

I don't make that much food, and during the day I'm always quiet healthy - I have cereal for breakfast, fruit as a snack and salad or wholemeal bread sandwiches for lunch.

It tends to be dinner time and at night when I have a problem mainly. I've moved back home with my parents and they have so much food in the cupboards. So I make dinner and then find once I eat one thing, I just have to continue. :frown:

I didn't really think it could be an eating disorder because I don't become obsessive about controlling what I eat. I haven't been to the doctor because I've been for loads of things recently, and I don't want to waste their time.

That's really considerate of you, but bear in mind that seeing a doctor is not a 'waste' of time. They are paid to provide care to their patients, and it seems that you need help at the moment. Your doctor would only refer you to a specialist anyway.

Try calling NHS Direct. Your call will be dealt with by qualified medical staff who can advise you on the best course of action.

I do exactly the same thing (I don't make myself sick though, so I just gain weight) so if you find a solution to it do post it so I can see it. I'm at uni too so its expensive to make several shopping trips a week to stock up on food.

Can I suggest the B-word? I have a friend who is very very severely bulimic. She will literally but £200 worth of food, eat it all in one sitting, then throw up - and it doesn't matter where.
Do something else to distract yourself. Or, as everyone else has said, go to doc

I didn't really think it could be bulimia because I don't do it all the time. I don't know. I don't even know why I'm posting on here. I feel a bit confused.

Binge-eating is an eating disorder. One that is often ignored and not addressed as one. I read an article last week on it and eating disorders are much more common than we think. They don't need to be incredibly serious either. I'm no doctor, but I think you do have an eating disorder. I had one too, and it was exactly the same as yours, but I didn't make myself sick. I just went through phases of 'hungry days' when I'd eat everything and anything for no reason other than it tasted good, and 'non hungry days' when I'd not have a bite all day. I never even thought of it as an eating disorder until I read that article, and I don't do it anymore anyway, probably because I got over whatever issues were causing me to do it.

Go to your docs, or search eating disorders (compulsive over-eating, binge-eating) on the net because there are some very useful websites which will help you feel less confused. If I find that article I'll post a link to it.

Again, I'm no doctor, but I honestly think you have an eating disorder. Eating disorders vary in severity, so it may not be as serious as it sounds. I know I thought that having an eating disorder was a terrible thing, it just sounds like that. Please see your doctor or do some further research.

You wouldn't have to be doing it all the time. Just because the behaviour doesn't occur every day, it doesn't prevent it being an eating disorder.

I agree with the eating slowly thing, i've heard that subconsciously u'll think that u're full, also eating with smaller cuttlery is meant to make to feel more full yet by eating less
