Don't be afraid, i was lucky enough to be flying on the day they had the last terrorist warning. We only managed to get into the country as our plane had already taken off. There really is nothing to be scared of, theres a huge amount of security at the airports. My friend got all his gear checked because and had his phone checked for explosive traces when we were checking in to leave the country :P

Ooh me too! I'm so glad it was that day and not the day after. I'd have hated not being allowed my ipod in my hand baggage...

I flew to the USA in September and I am OK!

As the others said, don't be afraid. Especially with flights to the US now, they will be so ridiculously security tight that you needn't worry about your situation.

If you're flying with BA you should be more worried about the strike action and the empty terminals!

:ditto:
I'm flying tomorrow morning to Gibraltar. Last time I was in Gibraltar airport, all the visitors and stuff were being escorted out of the terminal by military police, and all the passengers were being hastily moved onto the plane because of a bomb scare in the airport hehe. Apaprently it was someone leaving ahandbag unattended.

Anyway, don't worry, security is very very tight, and everyone is being incredibly vigilant. You'll be fine

You've got much more chance of dieing in the car to the airport...
You can get some tablets to take if it is something that really is bothering you. I went to the doctors when i was going to fly to new york because i suffer from panic attacks from time to time and the last time i flew i was worried about something happening, hence starting to panic. The tablets really helped as they slow down your nervous system and I can honestly say I did not worry one bit.
If it's really bad you can get anxiolytic drugs from the doctor, but they'll generally only give them to you if you're having anxiety attacks. Drugs won't allay your fears of terrorism, only suppress anxiety attacks.

I flew to Canada twice in the past 4 months and I am fine too

You know OP, the irony is that the planes are probably safer than ever before with the added security.

It's not an irrational fear, but it isn't a productive one either. Try and find something to keep your mind busy during the flight and avoid the anxiety

Safe trip!

You should be far more concerned about getting hit by lighting twice, as the chance of that happening is far higher.

For some easy to understand math, there are roughly 30,000 commercial flights each day. That's over ten million flights a year, and over one hundred million flights over the last decade. During that time span, an entire 4 planes were hijacked. That's 4 out of 100,000,000, or 1/25,000,000. In contrast, the odds of winning the British national lottery is 1/14,000,000. The chances of being hit by lightning in any given year is 1/280,000. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being cautious, but if you're going to be scared of everything that has a 1 in 100 million chance of happening, you're not going to live a very productive life.

Take out lots of insurance.
Don't worry about it, I've flown loads of times since 9/11 and I'm still here  There's more chance of the car you're in crashing than the plane you're in being hijacked or crashing.

I flew to the USA in december and let me tell you, you are more likely to die on the roads.
I flew to the US last year and I'm alive.

There is a really teeny chance of something happening on that flight, as Bismarck demonstrated. The only reason people get scared by the thought of it is because it was very well publicised. Everyone knows about the scary terrorists but very few people can rattle off car crash statistics. You are far more likely to die in a car crash, or even be murdered, than to die via the hand of terrorists. Do you have a paralysing fear of death whenever you get into a car? Probably not.
