KCL vs Durham vs Nottingham vs Aston

hi there,

I hold offers for Business/Management from the following unis:

Nottingham
Durham
Kings College London
Aston
Manchester

Out of them which do you think is the best- In terms of reputation and quality of teaching. From my research, I have gathered it being a battle between KCL and Nottingham. Durham has a strong reputation but it doesn't reach as far to its Business department in comparison with the others. I have broken it down to simple factors as follows:

Nottingham: Top general university, extremely strong in management with opportunities to work in other campuses abroad

KCL: Top general university, including prestigious name and location, strong management background

Durham: Excellent university, prestigious name but poor location (Stockton campus) Quality of their business course not as renown in comparison

Aston: Poor general university in comparison but reputable business school

Manchester: Good general university, good management course, good location

Overall, I think i need to decide between nottingham and KCL - But i would greatly appreciate your opinions.

Nottingham firm
KCL insurance

Any reasons behind that choice?
Personally you should rule Aston out of your list. I very almost applied there, and despite its reputation, the location (Birmingham) is a big no no. You're almost guarantee'd to find yourself in trouble as the area is quite bad.

I have to agree with DrEvil. Nottingham:Firm, KCL:Insurance.

Personally though, its your choice.

I would Say KCL as Firm
And Manchester as insurance

They're both Russell Group uni's have pretty good worldwide reps and their business schools are good. but as the guy above said...your choice mate and as long as your happy with them...who cares what others think?

Aston is the safest campus in the West Midlands, located in the city centre of the UK's second city. If anything, the location is excellent.

Reputation wise, the business school is held in very high regard, but have to agree overall University is not to the standard of Nottingham, nor KCL.

If I were you, I'd visit the uni's if you can. It was emensely helpful to me when I made my decision.

I do fully understand its my decision, but If you guys could say why you'd go for one and not the other it would greatly help - I didn't know what "Russell Group" was and the affect of its affiliation until now.

I plan on visiting my top 3 choice of unis in the near future but for now I just need some general info about each universities advantages and disadvantages.

A few have put Nottingham above KCL - Why? I would have thought KCL was slightly superior due to its (possible) greater reputation, course and location.

What would sound more appealing to employers when facing compeition against applicants from Warwick/LSE/Oxbridge:

A 1st from Nottingham University

or

A 1st from Kings College London

I would say Nottingham and Durham are the best out of all of them. KCL doesnt isn't that great, in fact I'd say it's about the same as Manchester.

With regards to Durham, the physical location doesn't really matter; the key issue is a degree from The University of Durham on your C.V.
Speaking from personal experience, ive been to KCL, and its not too bad. Its modernised (which is quite different for a London Uni), as a lot of them are listen and have to keep the main 'historic' part of the structure in tact. I haven't been up close and personal with the others 9due to my location - South East London), but i have looked at some of the others, and I still stand by my recommendation.

Rank-wise, I'd put KCL at the top, as it goes beyond the Russel Group. It is in fact part of the Golden Triangle.

3 Points on the Golden Triangle
Oxford
Cambridge
London
¬
And under London lies:
LSE
Imperial College London
UCL
KCL

Thus, it's more prestige in this sense.

Nottingham is a brilliant uni.. If anything - Obviously Durham is the best one from them all, but Notts is probs the best for what he wants to do..

You should have applied to Warwick matie!

The Russel group is not the most accurate way of ranking uni's as the size of the Uni allows it to have more money for research etc, hence Durham, Bath and York aren't in it since they are quite small universities. Look it up on Wiki and you'll see what I mean

Warwick required maths for its course, which I don't hold at A-Level - it stopped me applying to the top five for Management (Oxbridge, LSE, Bath, Warwick).

Decisions! Now its a scamble between Notts, Durham and KCL!

sorry to hear that, a lot of people i know regret not taking maths, but you list is good, id probably say KCL, not cos it was my third choice, but cos the location for it is ideal to "scout" for internships etc. IF you got an internship in London, im not too sure you would commute a few hundred mils (given your location) for a job everyday, unless you live in another city with a big company. and i heard KCL BM is competitive, i dont even have an offer for it yet lol! but nor do i personally want to go there, not because its crap, but because i have a better offer,
Reply 13
Where do you have a better offer from? Is it from one of the top five?

I should be visiting Nottingham and KCL and possibly Durham in the next 2 weeks, which should help with the decision making, I'll also try and get a few pictures taken to help others in a similar situation.
