does all the elitist stuff really count for much? from what i know of uni level study the onus is more on the individual. could you not graduate from sheffield with as much knowledge as a cambridge grad? what are peoples view on this idea, that what you do when your there is worth more than where you go

Sheffield is a reputable university, and although it is not known as having a good economics department, you will probably find a degree from this university as being sufficient for most jobs/postgraduate study. Getting a degree from one of the top departments will only really give you an advantage for certain specialisms like IB that are intensely competitive, so overall your life will not be over if you get an economics degree from Sheffield.

could i get onto a top masters with a first from sheffield?

because that would give me an edge for careers like IB

Reply 6

Careers like IB might be a little out of the way I'm afraid, for that we're talking LSE, Oxbridge or possibly Warwick, and even with a top degree from those places it'd be hard. Sheffield is pretty good as a general uni, but if you could make ABB, for the same grades places like Birmingham, Cardiff and SOAS are an open possibility.

i'll be the first investment banker from sheffield

all this top10 stuff is bull****, if your good enough you will get in. theres plenty of failed IB'ers from LSE and the like because they were crap at the job.... a good degree doesnt make you a good banker

But with society focusing more on the names and reputation, getting a degree form a good university is vital for these upper end jobs. If you are an employer, and you are faced with a graduate from warwick or Lse, and one from say Sheffield, it's pretty clear which one will be more favourable even if the graduate from sheffield is very good. Harsh as it may be, this is the real world. Sadly what seems to be written on paper, and official qualifications count more.

I know it has been over 2 years since you asked this but it probably is even more relevant now as you eneter your 3rd year.

When I did the Warwick Msc there was a girl who had done an undergrad at Sheffield and was now doing the Msc Economics at Warwick. And although she found it a bit of a struggle she did pass eventually. So it is certainly an option and definitely not a waste of time applying.
