How many people really take gap years?

I'm American and am thinking about going to a UK university. I was just wondering what percentage of students in the UK really take gap years. I think it would be a really great experience and am thinking about it, but at the same time I don't know if I really want to be a year older than most people when I start uni and then be 23 when I graduate (since the courses I'm interested in are 4 years).

In the UK a large amount do....not sure of actual numbers but in my school year out of 92 people, 15 took gap years. On average there's around 20 a year that do but it varies from school to school but generally quite a substantial number do.

I'm taking it, surely that's a good enough reason to do so as well?

Gap years are definitely getting more and more common..

I really wouldn't worry about the "being a year older thing" because i started uni and i was the youngest! Tonness of people on my course / corridor had taken gap years..

Then i left in favour of a gap year lol

Yeh gap years are really quite common now. I even know some people who have taken 2 gap years! I don't think it's a bad thing anyway to go to uni a year older with a bit extra experience behind you. Gap years are a good opportunity to do something that you may not get the chance to do in the future, or to earn a bit of extra money for uni!

I'm going to take one. In my year exactly half (!) are taking one.

I may be forced to take one, my medicine app is down the drain. But I think I'm the only one in my college who is doing that, there are about 100 in my year.

Oh dear :hugs: I can sympathise with you, i was forced to take a gap year, albeit for different reasons, and at the time I was really down about it. You just have to accept it as just one of those things and make the most of it. Actually now I'm glad of the break before uni! It's not the end of the world if it does happen. You should try again with your medicine application if it doesn't work out for you this year, don't give up
