so is that 100 couples or 50 couples and just having sex once or lots of times and is the girl ovulating or what.....

It would vary completely, because some people would be at more fertile points in their cycle than others.

But, if you were looking at 100 people who were in their late teens or early twenties, there would be more pregnancies than 100 people who were in their thirties or older (and are less fertile)...that's probably a reason why older couples find it hard to conceive whereas teenagers having unprotected sex = a lot of unplanned pregnancies.

Geek alert. I'm doing part of my dissertation on this lol, it's really interesting.

I've heard a female is only actually able to conceive one week before their period starts, and therefore any other time during the month it's very unlikely (though not impossible!) to get pregnant - it's how Catholics tend to avoid pregnancy with no contraception.

A hard one to answer.

I think it's important to point out that contraception percentages are based on how many women out of 100, having sex FOR A WHOLE YEAR, get pregnant.

I think if you have unprotected sex for a whole year the probability for all women is something like 75% (this is a figure that I have somewhere in the back of my mind - feel free to disregard). Obviously if you're younger and more fertile this would increase. So on average, 75% of women will be pregnant after trying for a year. I don't know any monthly stats.

"In healthy women trying to conceive, nearly all pregnancies can be attributed to intercourse during a six-day period ending on the day of ovulation." apparently. So you'd have to factor that in too.
If we're talking about them having unprotected sex over a year, then 85% would become pregnant.

No other information is available.

It depends, I mean if you smoke it lowers or fertility and if you drink loads it does also. So I suppose the couples who don't smoke and don't drink heavily, well the girl is more likely to become pregnant I suppose.

 I've been told that the best time to get pregnant is 2 weeks before your period as this is about midway through your cycle

you also have to take into account how regularly these people are having sex, if they're doing it daily (or nightly!) they are more likely to get pregnant than someone doing it once a week.

I dont know, but would have thought you would be more likely to get pregnant the week before, as midway through you are ovulating so the egg isnt actually anywhere close enough to the womb to be fertilised, whereas it is the week before. Feel free to correct that.

"One common method of finding out the best time to get pregnant is counting days. To do this, figure out when your next period is due. From this date, count back 12 to 16 days. This will give you a range of days when you will probably be ovulating. In normal case, for women with a 28-day cycle, the 14th day is often the best day to get pregnant. To use this method, you must know how long your cycle usually lasts and have relatively regular cycles"

Could be wrong though, I dunno.

WHOA! Don't spread rumours like this. it is possible to get pregnant ANY time, you cannot accurately predict what stage in your cycle you are at so why risk pregnancy?

She's not lying about the catholic form of contraception though; they call it the "Rythm" method.
Yes, but why do you think Catholics mostly have big families?

 I said it's unlikely, though not impossible, to get pregnant. I won't bother posting next time.

What? Except for the fact that s/he should've said two weeks, not one week, s/he is absolutely correct.

Readers: ALWAYS use contraception. There is NO time when you can be sure you are 100% safe.

you can get pregnant at any point in your cycle. the rhythm method of contraception relies on having sex at those points where you are least likely to conceive. according to a book that i have in my room which was written in like the 1980s, it has a failure rate of 10-20%. which is high enough that i won't be trying it any time soon. and there are 90 pregnancies in 100 women each year whose chosen contraceptive is "chance," apparently.

although, in those days, condoms were clearly pretty ****, since they seem to have had a 3-10% failure rate.

Answer is very simple. According to 'Biology' by Ville about 90 couples per 100(I mean women of coures:smile: will be pregnant if they have a sex in a period of one year. Hope it was helpful.
