I'm not sure about last year. But the year before, Bradford had about 2 places, and Anglia a few. If you're worried about grades, look at Orthoptics. Sheffield and Liverpool have many places every year.

Believe me, its a lot more interesting than optometry.

I think it's important to understand that most optometrists work in High Street shops and 'all' orthoptists work in hospitals.
Optometrists can get sessional work in hospitals and if they impress there they can retrain in something else.... subject to UKCAT scores these days.
Orthoptists are mostly concerned with children. It's about dealing with 'sqints' after all.
Optometrists will be seeing deminishing career opportunities because most people now 'go private' on their specs and although a DCLP - Diploma in Contact Lens Practice - is a way to move with the trend... it's highly unlikely that optometrists will get involved with laser correction of sight and that is where the sector is going.
That is optometry per se - measuring people up for specs - is a dying trade...

Optometry is still a good option for those wishing to advance in treatments such as ortho k that aren't run of the mill in the UK. If you fancy living abroad it's also a good option - and there's always research!
I go to my opticians quite a lot as you need checkups , changing lenses, making sure your eyes are healthy. I don't see how it's dying...
Orthoptics deals with binocular vision and ocular motility. That is our bread and butter so to speak.
However the role of the Orthoptist has expanded in recent years, and now includes glaucoma monitoring clinics, refraction (although obviously we aren't as good as optoms at it), and many other things.

As far as Sheffield goes, its great! The course is tough, especially second year. I have so much work to do, and i'm so behind! I shouldn't be on here really!

I've just finished placement in Cambridge which was great! My best one yet, so I'm really happy about that. There are a lot of placements so be prepared to spend 4 weeks away from sheffield every once in a while.

I definitely recommend applying though.

Bradford, Aston, City and Anglia Ruskin were in Clearing last year (although City disappeared from clearing very rapidly). I know this because I made up my mind late on last year that I wanted to study Optometry and was going to go to Bradford (was made an offer through clearing) but decided to wait in the end till 2007 as I really wanted to go to Cardiff so I now have an unconditional offer to start at Cardiff in September.
