Bunthulhu in pain!

Hi everyone,

I've had a viral infection for the past 2 weeks now. Over the past 4 or 5 days it's been developing into a sinus migraine which is now ridiculously bad. I bought some 'Non drowsy Sinutab' from the Chemist yesterday which contains paracetemol and it states to not take it with other paracetemol-containing products or anything containing pseudo-something; fair enough. It worked very well when I took it once or twice yesterday (it says to take it every 4-6 hours) but it does state in the leaflet that if you are on oral contraceptives (which I am) it may not work as well.

So, I took some at 12pm today (just over 2 and a half hours ago) but it hasn't helped at all and my head feels like it's going to burst. I've got some 400mg Ibuprofen which as far as I can tell doesn't contain any of the 'warning' ingredients on the Sinutab. I'm thinking it should be safe and I'm a bit desperate right now so I'll probably take it anyway, but I just thought I'd see if anyone had any last minute info as I like to be a bit careful and the doses of each drug are considerable.

Thanks for any help, rep available

Well I dont really have much medical or drug related backgrounds so I cant really help you :frown:

But just wanted to say I hope you get better soon :p:

And maybe see a doctor if your symptoms persist to an extreme degree?

Aww, thanks. I'll have to go again if it gets much worse but the doctor has told me there's nothing she can do except advise 'paracetemol and fluids'. A friend who had a terrible viral infection last year said my symptoms are exactly the same as hers and there was nothing she could do :frown:

Dispense with the sinus stuff and perhaps go for a painkiller with paracetamol and codeine?

I've had blocked sinuses since last april and I find anything that says is a sinus decongestant still doesn't work.

Thanks, that's a good idea, my mom probably has some. It's just that it's too soon to take anything else paracetemol-based and I really need something right now :frown:

pseudoephedrine... it is is a decongestant to unblock the nose... it's in the decongestant medication you're taking...

but important - don't take the decongestant with the co-codamol together...

they both contain paracetamol in and you don't want to overdose on paracetamol...

Sorry, what's co-codamol? It's not in the ibuprofen is it?

Correctamundo. Bunthulhu, the reason it says not to take anything containing pseudoephedrine is because you will generally not find an over-the-counter medicine containing this which doesn't also contain paracetamol. Paracetamol is what you need to watch out you don't overdose on. Ibuprofen is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) so will not contrubute to your paracetamol intake if that makes sense. They work in different ways so the two are perfectly safe to take together. In other words, go ahead and have your ibuprofen, just make sure you keep a note of what you took when so you don't accidentally overdose on anything. If non-prescribed medicines aren't doing the trick, see your doctor so they can prescribe something a bit stronger.

Thanks, no need for that, hope you get better soon. Btw, co-codamol is just another name for the combination of codeine phosphate and paracetamol that Talya referred to but you had already said you knew that the original decongestant contained paracetamol so that wasn't an option, revenged probably just didn't spot it. So you don't need to worry about that in reference to the ibuprofen but once you've gone the recommended time between paracetamol doses perhaps a co-codamol might help more than the painkillers you've tried already. Worth a try anyway.

Since you seem to know what you are talking about...

I just wanted to point out that the mechanism of action aren't all that different...

Aspirin and ibuprofen both are pain killers that reduce inflammation, which is why they are both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs... They work by inhibiting the enzyme cycloxygenase (COX)...

Paracetamol is not non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs becuase it does not reduce inflammation... but they do act as pain killers... and they also work by inhibiting the enzme COX... the only difference is that paracetamol only acts on the central nervous system...

Given the similarity of the drugs... I don't really understand why people are so frequently told to take paracetamol and ibuprofen together... I personally would never do so... for mild pain i take either one or the other but not both... and if i had severe pain i would take something with an opioid in such as co-codamol... but perhaps that's just me...
Go to the doctors!
I had a really high fever last summer and my auntie who is a doctor told me to take paracetamol and then iboprufen 2 hours later, so its probs ok to take your sinus stuff with ibroprufen, just wait a bit, and go to the docs for some stronger stuff if it doesnt go away!

Are you doing pharmacy or something? You certainly know your stuff. I think the reason it's ok to take both is because it's not an excess of the pain-killing mechanism that is the crux of adverse side effects in the event of an overdose but the damage caused to the liver, or in the case of NSAIDs, the gastrointestinal system. Hence why the two compliment each other to alleviate pain but do not contribute to any damage done outside of that mechanism. I could be wrong though, I won't do my pharmacology module til the third year.

Thanks very much, this is what I ended up doing and it helped a lot!

Jennybean and Revenged, thank you very much for your responses, although I can't quite follow some of it; I appreciate the medical wisdom! :p:

Robbolo; Bunthulhu took some ibuprofen at 3pm and some sinus meds a couple of hours later and she's still feeling pretty good - a LOT better than before at least! My face feels a bit weird and sore again though so I'll probably take something else before bed as the pain seems to be worst at night! :frown:

Awww, sorry for your hand, but contraception? wtf did i miss something? :p:

I just slashed my foot on some broken glass :frown: eventful day all around i guess
Also get enough sleep, make sure you're getting at least 8 hours, no more than 10 though. It does wonders for the immune system.

Get well soon! :hugs:

You only need extra contraception if you are oral contraceptives and take antibiotics. Hers is viral so she won't be taking those
