A first is for students who average over 70% during the course of your university studies. It's not a general benchmark, it's a national standard.

It depends how universities grade your courses, for instance my first year of study isn't graded toward my final marks, my second year is worth a third of my final mark and my final year two thirds.

i hear about people working towards a 2.1 etc and also about 70% as a general benchmark to getting first class honours.

are 1sts only reserved for the really dedicated and work like made for 3 years or can someone who works less rigidly but still keeps ontop of things attain it?

thanks

Well it depends how good you are. If you have a natural talent for the subject then it will feel easier and like less work than if you achieve purely through hard work.
