I've never actually heard of SOAS offering interviews, but my (poor) advice would be to spew a tangent of vaguely intellectual sounding vitrolic and hope for the best. It worked for me at UCL.

I'm doing Korean and History next year, hopefully I'll see you there

Hey, do you know why they've invited you for an interview? Anything strange about your application or situation, for example.

Otherwise, seeing as both Korean and Linguistics are ab initio, all you're gonna have to do is demonstrate a strong interest for the subjects; they won't expect you to know anything yet. And, of course, that you're reasonably intelligent and balanced as an individual

At my interview we just ended up chatting about computer games. I am, however, a speshul case, and the interviewer is the world's leading authority on ancient Chinese board games. mmm! take it easy & good luck:smile:

yeah i'm applying to do korean & linguistics and I happen to be Korean. lol
but i'm applying cuz i'm actually really interested in korean culture, history, society, people, literature etc a LOT and I'd like to know more!! And my korean isn't good enough to go to a korean uni to study korean stuf...:frown:

so yeah that's probably why...but i'm off to the open day tomorrow, so i think i'll just ask them what they'd ask me...

thanks for the replies!!

owhh mann.. did you get accepted???

i'm thinking of doing korean and linguistics aswel, otherwise chinese and korean.. i'm korean aswel, but i can only read basic stuff..

Piers, you didn't happen to be interviewed by a certain Andrew Lo did you? Word on the street says he's a bit of a dude.

Reply 6

Hey, yep, the one and only! He's certainly a bit of a dude. It's a shame as I think he's actually retiring next year, though you should have the joy of his lectures on the Chinese middle ages. Tip: don't be lulled into not taking notes.

Good luck when you start! It's a pretty intense year if you don't know any Chinese already.

hey, yeah i got in, i put it as my insurance choice
the interview was pretty much a discussion about how good at korean i am, rather than an interview..
if you're not korean, they're not gonna ask to interview you,
although if you are, they just want to see how good you are etc..
