No, Sporting.

This is funny as I meant "for real" as in I didn't think he was serious. I didn't even think about the Madrid link at the time, a very unintended pun. Looool

Didn't know how to word the title so it was short enough, but if you could go back and watch one player play, who would it be?
Despite him still playing up until 2006, would be Zidane for me. Only memories I have of him are the WC final and when he scored 2 late goals to beat England. Failing Zidane, I think I'd go for an in his prime Ronaldo or maybe a 2005 Kaka, my favourite player.

Don't contradict you. In terms of individual skills combined with the ones as a team player, he was the best footballer who I have ever seen playing football. Don't get me wrong, guys. There are a lot of football players with great team player skills (Iniesta to name an example) and there are also ones with great individual skills (Messi and Ronaldo), but Zidane has the best mix between these skills and that is why he was just the best in my view.

You can hardly say messi isn't a team player. It seems like you're basically just saying Zidane was good at passing and dribbling

True, if you consider the last decade, Messi was rather stubborn in his playing which is not an attribute of a team player. But the last season he has gone through a progress in his style of playing and is a better team player than before.

Not passing and dribbling alone. Another great property of Zidane was his overview for his teammates and the situation. Zidane was more by far than merely passing and dribbling.
Lol at people trying to compare Zidane to Messi.

Nostalgia does weird things to people.
Cruijff.

Played football like it never had been played.

You are comparing different positions so its not easy.

Zidane was head and shoulders the best midfielder of the past 30 years at least so he's hardly unworthy to be compared with Messi. Messi's never really done anything for Argentina worth remembering whereas Zidane excelled for some average French sides.

I agree it's hard/impossible to compare different positions, but when a player is scoring 60+ goals there is no comparison. Messi dragged Argentina through the group-stages when Argentina were playing pure ****e. A single player can't win the World Cup, especially not against teams like Germany that are so efficient and cohesive.

Messi will go down as the best or second best goalscorer in CL history. There really is no comparison to be made.
Zidane is the hipster's choice of footballer. When someone says him you know they are just trying too hard. He was piss poor for a lot of his time at Real Madrid.

Not better than Iniesta or even Laudrup.

Comparing him with Messi is an insult to Messi.

Great player. Doesn't change the fact he was massively overrated.

The same applies to Ronaldo and Messi to certain seasons too. Sometimes I thought that they were not good enough in a year to become world player of the year, but awarded by the FIFA nevertheless. I guess great players are/were always a bit overrated, no matter what the name is.

In what year since 2008 have Messi or Ronaldo not been the best?

lol no they aren't. If you think that then you've been spoiled by them and you will realise how good they were when they retire.

2010, in that year Xavi or Iniesta were the best. In my opinion.

I don't think so. I am sure Messi and Ronaldo get their successors when they retired. Maradona was the successor of Pele, Zidane was the one of Maradona and Ronaldo and Messi were the ones of Zidane. I am not afraid that another great players come up in the future.

I do think Cristiano is a tad overrated. No denying his goal scoring but when he isn't good, he's awful. Plus, he's extremely selfish.

So his play is between two extremes, or what did you want to say? in terms of Ronaldo I would say that he needs his players around him to be excellent. That is the reason why Ronaldo is not so good in the Portuguese squad by far.

Yes, he's either brilliant or awful, rarely is he in between. Maybe, but he still has 50+ international goals.
