Wow... Garlic stinks to high heaven. How about instead of garlic you try tea tree oil.

Out of interest whats the background to how they work?, Like do they all contain a common chemical which inhibts bacterial growth or kills them?

well, i did try ginger & clove oil... both are quite effective. its garlic, then ginger, the clove and finally mint. yea, some plants have antibacterial properties. Chemicals in their cells are toxic to bacteria or interfere with their metabolism in some other way. So basically what i had to do in this practical was see their effectivness by looking at growth of bacteria on an agar plate...
