people keep telling me that this is the case...would some current UCLers please tell me its not true...im from london and am at college in london too
should i go UCL or head up to Durham!!?

I thought the same last year but that really isn't right. Although there is a slightly better sense of community in Durham there is so much more to do and see in London - Theatres, Touristy type places, some excellent pubs and clubs - and excellent binges in halls if that is your kind of thing. We also have 3 seperate unions that we can directly use - UCLU, ULU and the UCL medics union. Plus you can go to other Uni of London places such as Kings Union and LSE union (Our union is a bit naf to be honest!) There is such an array of stuff to do though I can't see Durham being any better - I imagine that Durham might even become tedious after a while.

Since when was Durham a campus university anyway? I was repulsed by Durham when I went to visit the college I got an offer from in the last UCAS cycle, terrible place, I couldn't wait to get home! I turned up there and had school dinner with a bunch of morons that I could be surrounded by for 3 years, had a crap evening and went to bed early... then in the morning had to literally HIKE up like, 2 mountains to get to the Biology faculty and when I eventually got there it was the worst biology open day I have ever been to, one member of staff to like, 150 students and it was all rushed, was only in there for half an hour then I went home straight after; it was clearly rushed for all of the Nat Sci applicants who had to go to all of the different departments. I wasn't impressed at all! Complete opposite at UCL, I felt very welcomed there.

UCL definitely seemed very organised when I went for an interview there. Granted the building itself was going through some work at the time and looked a bit rubbish (but I don't mind that at all).

I remember going to an open day at Manchester. It was a complete joke when they had realised that they couldn't use the large lecture room and so rushed everyone into a tiny classroom. Even with the parents asked to leave, it was jam packed and in the height of summer was unbearable. Me and my sis left about 5 mins into the talk cause we couldn't take the crowd and the heat anymore.

UCL looks like a heck of a lot of fun to me - campus unis are good for community, but its not like you're missing out on anything. There's enough to do in London to satisfy everyone. You form close friendships in your groups and at accomodation. Campus unis aren't any better apart from a few more organised events - but London itself has many of those etc. The appeal of being a lively, buzzing city should sway ya

Yeah i have to say the open days and interviews are really well organised at ucl, i've been to two. The lunches were especially good! I went to an open day at Kings last week though and it was really badly organised i thought.

I had exactly the same experience at the Durham open day! I went to Cuths, where everyone spent the whole afternoon talking about how they didn't want to be there and were gutted about being rejected from Oxbridge. The meal was awful and the people weren't much better. In the evening they hired a party boat where everyone else went and got drunk. The geography "open day" involved sitting in a lecture theatre with 2 obviously fed up and unmotivated lecturers, who then told us we couldn't actually see any of the department due to 'maintenance work'...(why invite us to an open day then if you're not going to show us anything?).

There actually is quite a campus-y feel around the UCL Bloomsbury campus. You've got all the departments, library, union + the University of London union, Senate House Library then the British Library and the British Museum a short walk away; and the area is fool of green parks like Russell Square and Tavistock square. Also SOAS which has great food that UCL students can access; AND the Tottenham Court Road right beside all this, and 15 minutes walk from Trafalgar Square and all the delights of London and the West End. Come on! The UCL campus is surely the best in the world!

I am screwed. Though the UCL English department does place great emphasis on the study of a language which is certainly not English. They may be responsible for the degeneration of my mind to mush. Þæt wæs egeslic wyrd!
