Laptop?

Any recommendation for a good laptop for proper work, not so much note taking?

That's the most important question, what's your budget?

Also, what type of things are you going to be doing on the laptop, i.e. what is most important for your laptop? Do you need a strong processor? Or is a larger screen and a better graphics card more important?

I have a budget of about £400 and it needs to be fast and not freeze. I don't care so much about good graphics because I literally want to write essays or search the web, nothing like computing or gaming.

This one has a smaller screen but better CPU. Looks pretty good too.

Your best bet is to do some research and read reviews, Amazon tend to have cheap prices. For what you described, you will need around 4 GB of Ram an i3 or i5 in terms of the CPU and screen size should be 15 inches. Pretty standard for laptops nowadays - you should be able to find one for much less than 400 if you try.

Hey what a coincidence I am actually selling my MacBook Pro 15" 2009 with windows and Apple Mac software both installed in it that's the best you can get as some assignments are good on windows and research I find much more easier on Mac. So if your interesting it is actually a bit over your budget maybe you can make some amendments

Good advice there - although I would add, to go for the 15 inch screen rather than the 17 inch screen as the OP might have to occasionally use it on battery power, and of course a larger screen will eat up the battery life. Though that is just my opinion.

Both of those laptops look good for what the OP needs - I'd suggest focussing on getting at least an Intel Core i3 processor, at least 750GB HDD (for essays etc) and at least 4GB RAM, though preferably a bit more.

Oh, and if you get one with Windows 8, upgrade it to Windows 10, as windows 8 will take a lot of getting used to.

4gb of ram is enough as long as you aren't a heavy chrome browser

2009? Surely it's tech is pretty obsolete now 6 years on? Laptops move on pretty fast. Also, old ones (>5 years of frequent use) are at a higher risk of sudden failure or developing problems than laptops under 5 years. But I guess you can sell it for a bit still.

Chrome will use as much memory as you allow it to use. It works ok on my laptop with 6GB RAM, it works ok on my laptop with 1GB RAM. Though I'd recommend Firefox now that a lot of plugins are not supported on chrome.

As for the laptop, yeah looks good enough for what the OP will need. So long as you're not massively into games, integrated graphics will be fine.

Cos I was on 4gb of ram before, had a few issues when having 8-10 tabs or more....moved up to 12gb of ram, a lot smoother, got about 25 open right now, pretty smooth
