Overall rankings mean very little if you're in a top university but your department's crap.

Way to go, KCL! But UCL is already in world's top 9 uni.

UCL might be in top 9, howver it depends on the course you take, I'd suggest you to check course ranking

I think it's probably safe to say it works both ways. I'm at UCL for English, but I know a fair few King's English students being in intercollegiate accom.

Of the people I have spoken to, some of the UCL lot applied to Kings and got rejected and the reverse situation is is true with some of the King's lot as well. It's somewhat inevitable that when applying to two decent departments good applicants will lose out on places seemingly arbitrarily at times, simply because of the sheer bulk of applications. This is especially true of smaller departments like UCL and King's English, who receive masses of applicants for a fairly limited number of places.
UCL has a better overall reputation, but putting departmental differences aside, King's is more friendly, has a much nicer student union bar (I've been to both) and is generally better located in terms of central London.

I didn't apply to UCL, and I'm really excited about going to King's next year. The only reason I regret not applying to UCL is cause loads of my mates are going there. I'll still see them though, so no biggie

UCL is among the world's top 25 unis, whereas King's is somewhere between top 75 and 85.

UCL is 9th and kings is 22nd... not that it matters, but hey, doesnt hurt to know.

what about the geography department, is it well regarded though?

KCL's geography dept? Meh, don't know much about it but I don't think it's anything special. Although I know UCL's is top notch.
I dont think you can say all KCL are UCL rejects.
A really smart guy from my school got rejected from KCL but got in to UCL for medicine lol.
Ive got a offer from KCL and am waiting for a reply from UCL, i think i would easily pick UCL as my firm because of the rep.

UCL had the most unfreindly open day, we had to stand on the street outside the entrance and get pushed about by walkers by until we were let into the lecture theatre about half an hour later.. talk about giving good first expressions! Then once inside, we were given a boring lecture and a little booklet which bragged on about UCL which we were supposed to read and base one of the most important decisions of our life on! I rejected UCL as soon as I got home. This was last year btw, maybe they're improved it this year! KCL on the other hand had a fantastic open day.

I certainly found KCL a lot more welcoming than UCL.

I got the impression that KCL has a fantastic reputation and a solid history, but it's not pretentious or bland.

King's actually gave me a higher offer than UCL, who only wanted a B. Pffft. :P

And yes, I can definitely say King's is more welcoming too. I take a course at UCL and the ppl at the department office were just RUDE!

I like this abstract friendliness that lots of people talk about. Fair enough to say an open day was friendlier, or a department was friendlier, but it's a bit sweeping to say KCL is friendly and UCL is not. I've found my department to be very friendly indeed, as, incidentally I found the English department at Kings when I went to an open day, but it's a bit of an odd idea to take any large institution and call it friendly. And to make such an illusory claim a basis for choosing a uni seems odd to me, especially given so much of your time at uni is spent living with other students, seperate from the university. But that's just me.

Lol, I have two good friends who are first year medics at UCL and KCL and I told them to tell me what the bones in my arm were and my KCL friend told me while my UCL friend said "I don't know, we haven't done arms yet". Hee hee hee. Honestly what are they teaching them over there

Well... I could have applied to UCL (probably a good chance of getting in) but didn't.

Preferred Kings.

Almost - am pretty settled on King's - Wednesday's open day will be the moment of truth  what were your reasons for picking King's?

I see you're also a fellow northerner. Think we'll be a rare breed? :p:

I have an offer from KCL and UCL rejected me.
I think they are both equally as good but I have a feeling that people from UCL likes criticising KCL aaaa lot.
Chill man at the end of the day we're still brothers and sisters from the University of London and they're both just as prestigious

I got rejected by UCL and accepted by kings (firm), but that was probably due to the fact that I applied for Econ + Bus with East European Studies at UCL..... with a personal statement saying how much I want to do a maths degree.

 oooo no...we hate UCL! lol!
But no seriously, there is A LOT of rivalry between the 3 big UoL colleges (KCL, LSE and UCL)...particularly KCL and UCL!
It's just tradition stemming from the time they were founded really...all good fun though, with just a hint of seriousness :p:

Oh, and I rejected UCL once my offer came from Kings!
