Argh - forming bands at uni

Ok... it's my dream to form a band when at uni. (I play guitar and write music) But my friend said to me today 'i doubt you'll be able to form a band if you're doing psychology because not many people on a psychology course would want to be in a band'...

What is she talking about? Do you agree with this? I then said to her, even though she's not necassarily right, I would still meet other people anyway on different courses, ie - people I live with. I also said that I could advertise for bands too. She then said 'but what if you don't like these people?', and basically kept putting obsticles in the way!

What does she expect me to do? Give up?

Anyway, my main question, is it difficult to form a band at uni? Will I find it difficult because of my chosen course? (Psychology) I have applied to major cities (ie - liverpool, leeds, newcastle etc) so there would be no problem with the places, but do you think it would be difficult for me to start a band?

It's my dream to play in a band, and that's why I get wound up when people say stuff like that to me... any advice on how to form a band when at uni?

Sounds as if she's trying to convince you not to get into a band...

Anyway, I've been in the same band for 4 years, but now that I'm at Uni we're a little less productive, so I've been searching around for fellow musicians. Joining relevant societies is a good idea.. you'll meet plenty of enthusiastic people that way. If you really can't find anybody (this just won't happen).. then you could always advertise on TSR, in the correct Uni section.

You'll find plenty of musicians, but look out for the motivated ones. Take a look around notice boards at the Uni/music shops... you may find something of interest there (this is how we discovered our singer).

Trust me, it's not a difficult task, but takes time to find people who you would work well with. I'm highly motivated, and will jam with anybody regardless of their musical influences or tastes.... this opens more doors in the long run..

Good luck.

Haha WHAT THE FOOK is you friend talking about?

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
yeah as floyd said, there will be societies for a lot of different types of music, and just go to the one that suits you best... there are a lot of musical people at uni, not all doing musical degrees....

the only other thing i can say is don't force anything. Don't try too hard to make a band straight away, get to know the people a bit better first...

but overall, you have a good chance

You're doing Psychology and want to be in a band, so why wouldn't other Psychology students. Besides, you'll meet lots of people who aren't on your course. Don't worry
hahaha, Your friend is mental. I think. I go to Swansea and do Psychology and I'm bandless! I know a few people about but drummers are the problem (to find). Also, why does it have to be restricted to your psychology group? Yeah, there may be a few peeps who want to form a band who also do psychology, but you'll see other people from elsewhere. I have a bit of a small amp down at the moment, only good for practicing, so I like to think I can get a band sorted in the second year, and bring my larger amp down. The band I used to be in kind of fizzled out too. I'm about 3 weeks into my second term, and I plan to land a part time job this term/semester and try and sort something out bandwise. If all fails I can hopefully sort out a midi keyboard, get some new music software and record random stuff.

I also don't mind the genre of a band I join (within reason). Just as long as I get along with the individuals in it.

See if you uni has a band soc - A society specifically for people who want to form a band. If not, look into forming one! There must be loads of ppl at uni who want to orm a band but don't know how to find other musicians. Check out the University of Warwick's BandSoc for inspiration.
