Sleep pattern is ruining my education

I'm in sixth form and for the past 2 weeks I've had trouble sleeping.

My friends have all noticed and are starting to get frustrated that I miss so many lessons and I oversleep and am usually late, except one day a week when I've been extremely firm on myself by keeping the light on while I sleep and keeping the room temperature cool.

I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm always exhausted. In the school day if I've forced myself to get up and get ready I'm always sleepy. If I've come in late however (around 12pm) I'm usually fine. On days when I exhaust myself to stay up (I usually get tired and sleep between 4pm-9pm) I don't feel tired by 10pm or any of the following hours and end up sleeping at 2am, making myself even more tired the next day. It's so irritating. My body has become used to staying up at night and sleeping in the day. But I have school so I have to fix this or else I'll get chucked out soon! I've missed about 7 days this term because of it and it's only February.

Please guys any advice!!

I know what you mean, my body clock has always been wang eyed and I can't stay in a routine. Since new year and up until about a week ago, I was going to sleep between 4-8pm, which was quite surprising as my body clock doesn't stay in a routine for that long usually. Now I'm back to going to sleep between 12-4am. I'll probably switch to another time in the near future seeing as half term is coming up. But I can live with a dodgey body clock just fine.

How much sleep do you normally get a night and how much do you need so that you feel fine and not drained in any way?

You could just stay up all night one night and through the following day to whatever time you used to sleep at? Just a suggestion, helps me get out of a routine sometimes, temporarily.

Yeah I usually do the "stay awake for 2 days" thing to get out of it but I really can't do it at the moment because I need rest so I can work on my assignments well and not rush them. I usually feel good after 8-9 hours sleep, but the weird thing is the day after I'll need 10-11 hours, so I'm never able to fix a stable routine for sleep.

I've slept through the fire alarm twice and 3 alarms clocks on the odd occasion, and no I wasn't even drunk  That is just how screwed up my body clock has become cause of Uni.

However, I've tried to get things into a routine like I would at home, i.e. eat around the same times and get to sleep and wake up at the same time (unless I'm out) and it seems to be working. You could try that, it's hard but it really makes you feel a thousand times better in the morning and the day as a whole.

Good luck ^_^
In my last few years of school I only slept 4 or 5 hours a night (2am to 6 or 7am). Naps ftw :yy:. Have a nap when you get in from school. On the couch. They rule. Get a special nap blanket. Ooh... I want to nap now...

Yeh i have the exact same prob...i can never get to sleep at night before like 1am and then im so tired the next day i can barely get up for school and if i do im often late :frown: its horrible being so tired during the day but ive been like this so long i can never seem to get to sleep at night at a decent hour

..and even at the weekend if i go to bed at a reasonable time and then get a lie in in the morning to 12pm or so (so over 10 hours sleep) im still so sleepy the next day in work urgh its tres annoying :s-smilie:

I'm even considering sleeping tablets. Properly need the amount to knock out a horse but needless to say they would work. I just don't like the idea of been drugged just to get to sleep, but I need sleep! And the fact I definitely wouldn't wake up to a fire alarm worries me slightly.

Seek the advice of your local apothecary or witch-doctor, that is what I would do.

I have the same problem and Im pretty sure stress is the problem. Sometimes I go to college and i've only had 2 hours sleep and I cant find a solution. People have told me try try putting lavender on my pillow but I cant stand the smell of it so thats out of the question and I really dont want to use sleeping pills. Now exams are over though things are getting a lot better.

OP, try not to sleep in the day, if you are going to then only make it for an hour not 5! no wonder you cant sleep at night. If you can, try and force yourself to stay awake untill 10-11 or whatever time your routine should be. Usually works for me.
Same problem multiplied 10x. Tried everything from sleeping tablets to hypnosis and what not. well except for the acupuncture route (having a big phobia of needles). I usually go to bed round 10-12midnight but somehow cant force myself a wink... til like 3-4 in the morning.

I set the alarm clock at 7 every morning which seems to have no effect. I can barely wake up. Always end up missing the first lessons and even manage to be 30mins to an hr late in the second period which is quite terrible.

Before it used to be a big deal me being late being the centre of attention for at least the whole lesson. These days i think the teachers just sorta gave up on me. I always give them this 'better late than never'
If i somehow manage to go in on time theyd be quite surprise cos its such a rare thing.

Weekends are even worse i dont even manage to get up til like 2-4 in the afternoon....

I know how you feel. I don't get enough sleep AT ALL, although more than you, and I'm sure its one factor in my current downer :frown:

I don't think there's much you can do about it though, stress is probably the cause like others have said...

Well I've a short term solution that seemed to work on Monday and this morning - sleeping with the light on. I actually hear my alarm for some reason with the light on and I jump out of bed instantly. Obviously I can't keep this up for long but it seems to be the only thing that works. I wish there was a way that didn't use so much electricity though.
ive had this long term... not even a splash of water does the trick anymore. lol.
