It could be mild OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder), if its really upsetting you perhaps you'd be best seeing a psychologist?

Don't mean to scare you here btw, but this could be what it is.

Im in my college years currently and my perfectionist ideas are making me very upset. For example I do my hair in the morning and if it isnt perfect I get upset and feel uncomfortuble which leads me to be quiet in lessons. I always aim to be the best and I have an "all or nothing" attitude so when something goes slightly wrong its a massive downer for me. I went to a college party and I was intent on pulling and it bascially ruined my whole night when it could of been a great one with me and my friends just having fun.

More likely (tbh) to be low self esteem issues. or it could just be part of you're personality that you like stuff to be just right!

thats ok, but you're taking it a little to far. Prefer to have you hair perfect by all means, but learn to have the confidence to say; 'If i've spent 10mins on it and its not right, it's not going to be, so forget it.'

try and catch yourself in the act of feeling down becasue you don't feel you've done something well enough, and give your self a small shake, say something like: 'i'm georgeous and must accept myself how i am without trying to be perfect!'

and talk to people about it. if not your friends, your colledge/uni counceller/personal tutor. they're there for that, and they're proabbly be better able/qualified to advice you than me anyway!!

Above all: don't worry to much. hope that's helpful, go well!
Honestly the first thing I thought of was mild OCD, but bronsonbear could be right also, it could just be low self-esteem issues.

Or a combination of both?

I feel the same sort of. Like I really get annoyed if my work isn't perfectly neat or my eyebrows looking just right. I'll screw up work and start again if I make messyness and this perfectionism is slowing me down!

It's not OCD. Over diagnosis.

Just learn to let go, try to distract yourself and perfect is annoying anyway.

Ah I get the same thing as that quite a lot, I get really agitated if I know something's not right, sometimes I need to keep washing my hands if they feel unclean. Lots of the time I just try and focus on something else and calm myself down and that often works.

Again, I didn't realise this kinda thing was odd...I hope it isn't OCD :s-smilie:

The hand-washing does sound a like it could possibly be OCD... to me anyway (sorry, I might be wrong... ). But to the original poster, what you describe is not uncommon. I have a serious perfectionism problem too, which makes me think I've failed an essay totally or something, even if the mark is good, because it's not good enough for my own (impossible) standards. It can feel so distressing and depressing, but I think it does have a lot to do with low self-esteem. Just try to focus on your strengths I guess, and block the bad stuff out of your mind if you can.

Ha ha, I even had to go back and edit myself, because I left a word out. *Curses perfectionism*

It isn't obsessive compulsive disorder... Giving such a label on the basis of four lines of text on an internet forum is absolute nonsense... despite what you think psychologists try to avoid giving people such labels at all costs and unless there is significant evidence that it has interferred with their life...

It's not OCD. Over diagnosis.

I totally agree ...

To the original poster... First of all there is nothing wrong with perfectionism... It is very valuable in real life...

but you have to understand that you are not being good at everything regardless of how you try...

Nobody's perfect!...
