I think I have Narcissistic person disorder...

Hi there,

After watching a bit of that documentary on Channel 4 I think I have Narcissistic person disorder.

I took a test breifly and I was shocked to see how some, if not most of the characteristic's apply to me!

Heres a little test-

1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance

Yep I think I am very important

2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

Hmm, I do think about being rich and famous ALOT.

3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by other special people

Dont quite know about this one

4. requires excessive admiration

I really like it when people comment me on things

5. strong sense of entitlement

Dont know what this means?

6. takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

To an extent....maybe

7. lacks empathy

I think so, I sometimes think that if my pearants die I would not really be bothered. It shocks me.

8. is often envious or believes others are envious of him or her

Very badly, I am envious of many people to the piont where I get depressed.

9. arrogant affect.

Dont know what this means.

Should I go see my doctor?

Thanks.

Haha! I think you need to ask someone who knows you in real life. If you had all those symptoms and most people who've met you thought you were unbearable then I suppose you could label yourself with that term, but you will need some pretty honest answers from people, which could be upsetting. However, there are plenty of people like that in the world who are simply just arrogant ****s. Giving your personality a title, especially given the nature of this "syndrome" might only serve to exacerbate your sense of your own worth? Besides I don't think a doctor could help you. If you think you may be getting a little cocky and you don't want to become that kind of person, maybe a counsellor could help you, or you could do the more practical thing and become involved in helping people less fortunate than yourself to get back in touch with your humility.

Nah, it doesn't sound like you're a narcissist at all. Also, hard core narcissists are usually quite happy to find that they have this disorder, so the fact that you're worried about it, and are actually contemplating seeing a doctor, shows that you're not one. Not a serious one, anyway.

I agree, pretty much. (Although I wouldn't go so far as to say you may be an "arrogant ****.") I honestly doubt that from this evidence you have narcissistic personality disorder. I especially agree with the point about labelling yourself.

> Grandiose sense of self importance? Do you feel it's justified? And if you simply mean that you are at the centre of your world, then I really wouldn't worry about that. Join the club.

> Dream of being rich and famous. Who doesn't? Sounds like a fairly standard dream to me. I do also, but it doesn't mean I (a) think it's necessarily going to come true, and (b) I obsess constantly about it. Besides, you didn't answer the question. Contemplating wealth and fame isn't quite the same as wanting "unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty of ideal love."

> Everybody likes it when they are complimented. That's not narcissism, it's human...ism.

> Strong sense on entitlement - do you believe it's your right to be elevated above others? I think a lot of people feel they have an imaginary right bestowed on them.

> Feeling empathy is different from not being easily saddened by the death of another. Lacking empathy means you are unable to imagine yourself in someone else's position, and find it difficult to imagine that something may cause them pain, distress, happiness, etc.

> We all get jealous.

> Arrogant effect - do you openly act as if you are superior to others? From reading your post, my gut instinct is that you don't...

I don't think it's worth a doctor's appointment. I think just a simple reality check's in order.

I don't think so. I doubt a Narcissist would advertise that they didn't know what certain words meant on an internet forum, would defy the vanity and pride somewhat to admit that.

Are you sure you're not just being a teenager?

This is the problem with self diagnosis on the internet. I could quite easily say that I have mild bipolar disorder because sometimes I'm in a really elated mood and I can sometimes act irrationally, and sometimes I feel despairingly depressed and so on. It's not just the symptoms, it's the severity of them and the length of time they present for. The majority of people hear voices from time to time, and everyone has an "internal voice" they use to think with, but that doesn't mean they're psychotic.

Btw, I agree with everyone else, you don't sound like someone with a Narcissistic PD.

Err, no they don't. about 10% of poeple will have auditory halucinations sometime in their life. thsi is by no way a majority and seriously hearing voices would be something to be concerned about.

Second the above poster- most people think about themselves more than anyone else, likes being complimented, care deeply about what others think of them, want to excel, and so on. It would only be a 'disorder' if you were a complete self-centered a***hole, with delusions and obsessions of beauty, wealth, fame, status and power. Even then I'd hesitate to classify it as a disorder, it would more likely be an extreme of the 'normal' personality scale.

7. lacks empathy

I sometimes think that too. But you can't imagine how you'd feel, esp. if no-one close to you has dies. You would be bothered. If you are aware of other people's feelings, and adjust your behaviour when it might upset someone close, you have empathy.

Yeah, I saw that too. Did anyone else think you just had to look at the expression on his face to see how disturbed he was?
