Hey guys, I'm totally stuck between my two final choices: Bristol and KCL.
I know that KCL is renowned for Neuro, but I don't think I could bear London's lifestyle and expenses. Moreover, I don't think I'll be able to apply for university halls and accomodations in time.
Bristol is my kind of town and the uni is a very good institution but I can't find a lot about it's reputation for Neuro.
Would it be mad to choose Bristol over KCL? What would you do in my place?

Probably Bristol since you seem more comfortable about it
Okay I totally want to drop out of Neuroscience now...
all that work and effort for nothing :facepalm:

Come to KCL  all undergrads are guaranteed uni accommodation so that wouldn't be a problem

Hi everyone! I've read all of this thread although I haven't posted anything yet. I need your help! I'm a gap year student from London, currently travelling in India. I took a year out because during AS I didn't know what I wanted to study. I've applied for Neuroscience and got unconditionals (as I already have my grades) for Manchester, UCL, Bristol, King's, and York, but I'm having so much trouble deciding which one to accept - the decision is plaguing me when I just want to relax and enjoy travelling! Manchester accommodation starts being allocated in May (already started then) and they have one amazing new build and the rest aren't very nice so I need to make a decision ASAP in case I want to go there. I was going to put that down as I love the look of the nightlife, culture, study spaces available, closeness to other cities, good scientific rep, etc. but then I looked again at the course and it doesn't really specialise, at least not in anything I'm interested in. Bristol is a pretty city with ok nightlife, and a nice looking course, but I had my heart set on Manchester's cosmopolitan vibe. It may be that I visited Manchester recently for the interview but Bristol 2 years ago so it's less in my mind. And then UCL has an amazing rep for neuro, and a really good looking course, but I've lived in London my whole life and wanted to go somewhere new, the lecturer on the open day appeared really stern, the nightlife is expensive, accommodation is poor, and study spaces don't look like an efficient learning environment. It's really between those 3 as I didn't like York or King's as much. Any advice would be much appreciated!

If your coming from London, Manchester's cosmopolitan vibe would be pretty disappointing, at least, it was for me as I found it very small.
Depending on what kind of music you like, Bristol has some fairly outstanding night life, tbh. The course there looks amazing (but I am biased because Bristol is my firm).
I had an offer from King's but, much like yourself, I couldn't see myself living and studying in the city I'd spent all of my life. Both UCL and KCL have a great reputation for Neuroscience, but at what level? Most of the prestige, from my observations, is post-graduate based.

If you wanted newer accommodation, Bristol has that in abundance. It's also a lot cheaper to get back to London than it is from Manchester (at least less than half the price).
Bristol is smaller though, and has a few hills. So there's that.
The fact that Manchester doesn't have much specialisation is something that put me off King's; like I said, if Neuroscience is what you want to study, your not just hoping to get segwayed into medicine, then Bristol's course is outstanding.

Are you applying for entry this year??
Anyone Applied to neuroscience at Sussex university?

Thanks for the quick response! (And sorry I didn't get a chance to reply sooner.)
On my first visit to Manch I was disappointed by the size - I thought all well known cities would be just as big as London. But then on my second visit I saw that it has specific areas eg lgbt, a more grungey drinking area, shopping, as well as bigger venues etc., which I quite like, and I still like the cosmopolitan vibe, being the apparently second biggest city in the UK, so that's all good for me.
Yeah, Bristol nightlife does seem alright, I'm a bit worried it's more like small bars and then the bigger venues where everyone's off their heads - like perhaps not much variety? But I am hoping to check out the nightlife soon, now that I'm back in London (wanted a break from travelling).
The course there does look good too..
Where have you looked? All I did in terms of rep was look at league table rankings. I'd like to get into artificial intelligence, which is specific and might be hard to break into from this route, so although I don't really want to go to UCL I'm thinking maybe for this reason I should.. :frown: Also would love to do a Msci/Phd in the USA, so again it's rep might be v useful?
I like the idea of living more in halls, does Bristol have nice self-catered options for this too?
Yeah, for this year, you too right?

You may well be right about the night-life in Bristol, I just know that a lot of great music came from there, from the likes of Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, Drum and Bass legends such as DJ Die, Roni Size and DJ Krust, to Dubstep artists such a Pinch. None of that might be your cup of tea though but I'm pretty sure there is variety of sound if not a wide variety of venue.

I looked into Leicester, Sussex, KCL, Exeter and Bristol; offers from all but the latter were insured and firmed respectively. I am applying for entry this year, yes.
My plan is undergrad in Bristol and then masters at a more prestigious university. Personally, I think there isn't a massive, massive difference between universities in the top 20 for our course in terms of level at which you'll be taught; the prestige is just linked to output of staff etc. and has little to do with the students. That said, it probably would go a long way if applying for Phds in America. You got phd in America money?? Cor, lend me £50?

If your interested in AI then I know Sussex has links to that because their course is more Cognitive Science based and that is a big aspect of it. It might be something worth specialising in at masters level rather than narrowing your choice now.

Bristol has self-catered choices galore, both private and university associated.

Forgive me if this is a bit dense, I just woke up from a nap, but if you're applying for this year, shouldn't you have a firm and insurance already?
Hi guys, I just wanted to ask about the difference between the BSc and the MSci Neuroscience course at KCL. Are graduate opportunities different? Also what is a MSci degree?

It's a year longer
Graduate opportunities will be markedly improved
MSci is a masters degree, so at the end of the four years you will have both a BSc degree and a masters degree.
Hi everyone!
Please can I have some advice? I was a hopeful medic up to this point, but now I'm seriously considering neuroscience. It's always something I've been fascinated by, but I didn't bother pursuing it because I thought medicine at least would give me job security. But I'm not sure if I want to be a doctor, or if I'll get the grades :frown: my issue is this; can I apply for neuroscience in clearing so that I don't have to take a gap year? What would you do if you were in my situation? (Sorry, I'm pretty desperate at the moment!)

I'm not really able to offer any advice as I don't know how the whole clearing thing works. I assume places for neuroscience are fairly well contested, especially this year with (iirc) many people failing the medicine aptitude tests and so being somewhat forced into neuroscience.

Where are you hoping to apply to?

Ahh okay, that does sound alright. Really want to see for myself but my mates are studying for their exams atm :/
Nice choice
Haha, no I haven't the money  I want to study my Bsc in America but don't know how the money would work out so probs stuck here, and hoping for the future.. But yeah I agree teaching would be at a similar level, and from my experience the better teachers are often at the less prestigious places anyway as they're more helpful (comparing secondary to 6th form). But looked again at the UCL course and it looks amazing - much more rigorous and specific to what I'm interested in- and one of the destinations was a phd at harvard!, but again it's London and everything else etc...
Looked again at the Manchester optional modules and yeah it's really bad, like still a wide variety of biology modules in third year with a few specific ones that I'm not interested in. Shame, I really loved everything else about the uni.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I did like the look of the sussex course but thought a slightly bigger and better rep uni would be good in the long run - same with courses in Europe that actually offer what I'd like to study (neuroscience with philosophy). But probs better to get a solid understanding in neuroscience first.
My deadline is June 8 based on when the last uni responded to me. Because I already have my grades from last year I just need to accept one of the offers.
anyone going to QMUL for neuroscience ?

Have you any idea about the course at QMUL ?
Were are you going to stay ?
I've created a thread for firm offer holders for Neuroscience at Bristol, would be great to know who's going! http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4050007&highlight=neuroscience+bristol#primary_content
Anyone had chosen Nottingham?
Hi guys, is anyone going to St.Andrews?
