Why does my head jerk when I'm tired?

It comes on with no warning and it...

*suddenly jerks like I'm shaking it from side to side and/or
*snaps to one side (like I'm turning really sharply) then goes back to normal position.

It's fine in private, but it happens a lot in public and it's embarrassing. It calms down very slightly when I touch the back of my head, but then it starts again later on.

Is it a spasm/a tic?

BTW, I'm not - as far as I'm aware - epileptic.

EDIT: it happens when I'm RRREEEALLY tired - maybe it's the same as the way your body jerks sometimes just as you're about to fall asleep?

Only when you are tired? Strange...

I get that too when I'm in bed and just dropping off to sleep.

It's like when you get those dreams and then you suddenly jerk. It's really scary sometimes!

I do that too, although its more when I'm about to yawn/need to stretch. Only got weird looks of my friends, as they were the only people who noticied

I do it too, when i'm tired. I always have, dunno why. I can relate to your problem though, it's kinda scary sometimes, it jerks when you aren't expecting it, kinda embarrassing if you've got company. I've noticed though, if i spend less time at the pc, it doesn't do it as much. How much time do you spend online?

I had this problem just after my mum had cancer, like a nervous tick. Spoke to my doctor, and never had it since.
