how to help a friend

ok i have a friend who went through something really awful in the past, she seems to be dwelling on it more and more and its really getting her down. im living a long way from her so i cant really do the usual take her out, keep her busy thing and i cant offer her any practical advice because its not a problem that can be solved. im one of two people who know whats really upsetting her, her parents havnt got a clue and although i have said she should tell them she just cant face it.

what on earth can i possibly say to her other than the usual anoying pleasantries and "im here to talk whenever..."??

Try not to do the whole intense "im here for you" stuff, just keep her mind on other things, try to appeal to her sense of humour and I'm sure she'll appreciate what you're trying to do!
