Trapped finger

 I trapped my finger in the car door today and because the door was locked, it was squashed for quite a long time. The bottom half of the nail immediately went purple and the cuticle ripped open. At home I put it in ice and bandaged it up since it was bleeding heavily.

Any ideas of what I should do now? Will the nail fall off? Should I go to the doctors? The pain is so unbearable - a lot of throbbing!

A fellow vetty! I would just try and keep it cold and wrapped up tightly. If it looks really nasty by tomorrow you can see a doctor but unless there's some flaps of skin they could stitch up I'm not sure what even they could do about it really. If the blood supply was cut off for long enough your nail might fall off but should grow back pretty quickly. Have you taken some painkillers?

Yeouch!

Personally I'd get down to the doctors right away. It might be a bit late but you might catch them for an emergency appointment. If its very bad or possibly broken go to the hospital. The doctor may well tell you to go there anyway.

Oww. Sounds agony. Poor you.

How long ago did it happen ? If it is agony, i would call ur doctor - just to see what they say.

Can u move it?. Could possibly have a fracture.

Mm. sounds like your nail will probabally fall off- thats what happened when I crushed my finger anyway- sounds similar. Just keep cooling it with ice every so often and taking pain killers. The worst of the pain should go away after a day or so. Even if the end of your finger is broken- mine was- all they did was lightly bandage it- they dont do anything for broken ends of fingers as far as I was told.

Go to the doctors, he/she will advise you best and probably wrap it up for you so it doesn't get infected and give you some pain killers.

Thanks for all the advice. I phoned the NHS advice line after the walk in centre said they couldn't do anything! The nurse said she would call back.

Just took some ibuprofen as well, so hope that works. I took the bandage of and my finger is so swollen :frown: It's my left hand too, so looks like so house/school work for a while..!

I did this last year! My nail went black and snapped a bit too, i went to A&E and all they did was bandage it up properly so that if i knocked it by accident i wouldn't be in so much pain. Take lots of painkillers and the throbbing goes down after a bit  you have my sympathy!

You should definitly be sure to see a doctor, as there could be other complications. I cut my hand a while back, turned out I'd severed four tendons, but it wasn't till a week later that I found out, and it should have been operated on ASAP.
